Today's whiskey comes from now non-active stills at Stitzel-Weller in Louisville, KY.

Jefferson 18yr Presidential Select, single barrel bourbon.

I think I may have found a new favorite. This delectable whiskey is what bourbon is all about, as far as I'm concerned.

One nose of this liquid gold conjures up notes of brandied cherries and cinnamon.

Once it hits the palate, you are treated to bold flavors of cherry pie, dipped in caramel, and topped with vanilla ice cream. A hint of toasted coconut brings up the sinfully long finish. I think I'm in love.

This whiskey's sweetness comes from a high wheat content in the mash bill. A small amount of rye adds the perfect amount of spice for an incredible balance.

18 years in super-charred American white oak casks brings out the caramel and vanilla sweetness, as well as providing a gorgeous deep cherry-wood amber color.

This stuff is heaven in a bottle. I give it a 99 out of 100.

I had a great work trip to Tennessee & Kentucky two weeks ago, visiting whiskey distilleries.

Here I am at Stitzel-Weller, now the official Bulleit headquarters:

Tom Bulleit (founder of Bulleit Bourbon & Rye Whiskeys) and I. He's a delightful man:

At the George Dickel Tennessee Whisky distillery in Tullahoma, TN:

I love Crown, Crown and Coke, Crown and Tonic, Crown and Seven. I recently passed the bar exam. Do you think we could be invited for a weekend of nourishment.

    As the Derailers sing:

I got my PHD...in heartaches and misery
    and a BSN...barstool phil-osophy
    You're my inspir-ation...for higher edu-cation
Now the final test is right in front of me.

    CHORUS
    I'm taking a bar exam...under a neon sign
I'm gonna to graduate...when your off my mind
In this honky tonk school...we've got a hell of a band
Drink by drink...takin' a bar exam

    Auchroisk 20 Year Old

One of two Speyside whiskies in the 2010 Special Releases which seldom become available at any age, still less at 20 years plus.

This rare Auchroisk has been released after 20 years in a mix of American and European Oak Casks, making it a "poised, sweet and astonishingly sophisticated dessert whisky", say tasters.

Bottled at its natural cask strength of 58.1% ABV, it is a limited edition of only 6000 individually numbered bottles.

Appearance: Lustrous antique gold. Light beading and texture.

Nose: No or very little nose prickle; immediately deeper and richer than you might expect. Starts as creamy, nutty, vanilla toffee, crème brûlée. Then fresher traces of fruit cake mix, or a bunch of sweet, ripe dessert grapes (each suggesting a little European oak) and apple cobbler,
eventually becoming an entire candy shop. Adding a good splash of water delivers a sweet and fruity nose; light, but with some depth. There’s a clear Speyside focus, with fruit cocktail and an underlying rich, birthday cake-like maltiness.

Body: Medium oily. Creamier with water.

Taste: Warming at cask strength. Rich and nutty yet also dusty. Then, in turn: toffee, caramel, tangy fresh fruits; biscuit, short pastry, fig newtons. With water the mouth-feel is more soft and creamy and the taste is sweet throughout, suggesting hints of applesauce and vanilla ice cream.

Finish: Short. Dark, earthy chocolate and hints of tropical fruit. Later oak.
