If I was single with no kids, I might say; What the Hell! Let's do it!

BTW, I assume you have to join the 'group' on the site to view the details?

Hey Expat your cool. I love to play devil's advocate myself when looking at new ideas and if something can't take some critical jabs to see if it remains standing, well I sure don't want to sleep in it!

Oh, and thanks for the tip about the blood. hahahhahahaaha

TR, yeah it is a membership group but you can join and then quit or make it so there is no email, whatever. Just wanted to keep trolls out, otherwise it would have been open to the public.

    Hey Expat
Great job researching that area. In one of your recent post about men and woman and their differences, this thread is a classic example of that. See I have thought of above and beyond what you have already brought out. And being true to my nature my ideas are more emotionally inclined.

Not only are the occupants of the island away from the mainland, they are away from any family that they leave behind. Of course the family can come and visit and vice versa, but in times of crisis getting to them may be a bit difficult. This could occur if you were living on the other side of the country from them as well, or as in your case, another country. It is not impossible though, it is more of a time factor.

Also I have thought of my children possibly being the only children on the island. Now as already stated we can have visitors but that would be few and far between. I have really gone over the effect it could have on them. I have a friend who grew up on a tropical island. She was close enough to the mainland about a 15 minute boatride, so she was close enough to civilization that she was able to still be apart of things. She was homeschooled by her mother and was accepted at a University for her college education. She had her brother and sister to play with, but I know that did get to her at times.

I am currently homeschooling my children and I know that their education can be transfered to a mainland university if and when it is time for them to further their education. I also am taking a spanish course and hope to be fluent in a years time. I will feel like a duck out of water there anyway, I minds well know the language. Edited to add, that I feel comfortable enough that I would not mind homeschooling other children as well. I really enjoy kids talking to them, teaching them and seeing how their minds work is really a charge for me.

The medical care is a big issue for me, as I am sure it is for many others. We will be close enough to civilization that we will not have to worry about LTC. The worry in my mind will be emergency care. I personally am trained in emergency medical care. And I am certified in advanced cardiac life support. We can equip the island with the neccesary equipment if there was ever a need of it. Also you must remember that with mainland or other islands within 10-15 minutes of us, this is the same as most travel distances in an ambulance. Also it would not be hard to train a person who is willing to learn. I am sure that anyone who resides there will want to have the ability to put into action these tools if there was an emergency situation.

Going to the island with our suitcases and start hacking down trees is not our idea of hard work. There will be facilities in place before we even take up residence there. That is one reason we have given such a large window before we start to reside there. Celtic has contributed in terms of solar energy ideas and also waste removal(I know there are fancy words for that, but I don't know what they are called) I plan on educating myself on these subjects as well. And what great training for my kids who live in a plastic society now and think that all you have to do is take the garbage to the curb and it magically disappears.

With the WWW accesiblility we will not be that lonley as far as socialization either. How many of us spend nights in the chatroom anyway? Again with the other islands so close there is a chance for taking the night off and enjoying yourself in one of the nearby resorts. The others on the island will be a great asset to have as well. That is why there is a need to make sure we are all mature enough and emotinally stable enough to handle balancing between solitude and social interaction.

One thing I have thought of and spoke to Skipper about and really is one of my main concerns is privacy. I like my privacy and sometimes turn off the ringer on the phone, and the lights and disappear into my family. I like that, tuning out the world and having alone time. Since we will all have our own residence and as already stated some basic ground rules, this should not be a problem.

Oh I am sure there are already things I have thought of and have not mentioned here, that I have settled already in my mind. There is a loss involved in going there, but there are many benefits as well.

I will take a look at your links. I appreciate you posting them. So are you still thinking of relocating there? Or have you gotten used to frostbite

    Hiyas Wendy:

You're right about the differences thing. I didn't consider the emotional side of things much at all, apart from my question about you having the temperament for living in a foreign culture.

You've obviously done a lot of thinking about this. As far as the kids go, I think it will easier for them than the adults! Kids are so quick to learn new things and adapt, the lucky little bastards. I've always thought that young people should have to spend 2 years in another country simply to widen their experience and appreciation. Should this enterprise work, it will be an amazing experience for them.

I'm not thinking of relocating to Panama to live, it's just one of the destinations on my travel list in the next few years (possibly early 2004, so get building!). I find Canada to be a convenient base to stay, plus emigrating is a tough process which I've done once, but have no real desire to repeat.

Oh, and the only fancy words I know for "waste removal" are "getting rid of the shit". Will swearing be allowed on the island?

HMMMM....well, to me it sounds like a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. I think I would go broke traveling back and forth to the U.S.

Sounds like a way cool adventure, but I like my life here. With just a few minutes travel, I can go dirt bike riding, horse back riding, skiing,(water and snow) camping, malls, theatres, concerts, etc. With a short flight, I can be on a nice beach.

    Just call me LAZY! LOL!

Very tempting, but aside practical difficulties (Visas to work in US etc., which I am sure are get-around-able if the US Passport application procedure is ANYTHING like the UK's procedure), I've kinda got the next few years spoken for; nothing that wonderful, it's just my girlfriend's at Conservatory, and I'll probably do my teaching certificate after that. But over and above, it's a wee bit of hasstle as it stands getting to see my daughters each month, what with living nine hours travel away from them, and living the other side of the Atlantic would make that even worse.

However, I intend to win the Lottery (UK, average jackpot £8m). Yeah, I know I won't, doh, but it's a pleasent thought, playing 'my yacht is bigger than your yacht'. Nice trips to the Galapogos Islands to annoy the JW's there by throwing peanuts at the KH windows...

People living in glass paradigms shouldn't throw stones...
