I loved school, I loved reading, I loved exploring in encyclopediae and dictionaries when I was a kid. Lots of JWs in my congregation told me that I was "too smart for my own good". They didn't like it that a girl was well-read and excelled academically.

Somewhat. I knew some of the BS. I tried to reconcile the teachings with my faith. It was totally betrayed.

I still think I'm smart. LoL. That's why I'm always debating more intelligent people to put me back in my place.

    Loz . . .
I was already well educated when I went into it ...which makes me feel more stupid...

Yeah me too . . . I did part of a science degree majoring in Earth Sciences prior to indoctrination . . . I got no excuse.

I think the "intellectual" part of my brain shut down while the "spiritual" neurons had their way. I always suspected it was still there but happily boarded the crazy train anyway.

Fortunately it was still there on my exit . . . albeit covered in dust . . . all it said to me was . . . . idiot!

I knew quite a few elders like Jam describes:

    - i.e. just because they had been appointed an elder in the congregation, they seemed to think that they automatically knew more about every conceivable subject than the rest of us did.

The younger they were, the more pronounced this feeling of superiority seemed to be (One I recall even affected a distinctive peacock strut after his appointment).

As for me, I never considered myself anything other than "unlettered and ordinary" - just like the apostles! I certainly never bought into the idea that reading the Watchtower and Awake magazines gave you the equivalent of a college education (unless it was for a Diploma of Idiocy).

    Bill.

I did not think I was an intellectual. But I did think I knew the Bible well. I thought jws were experts on the Bible and non-jws knew nothing or very little about it. This was what I was taught by the witnesses.

Of course, now I know -I know very little.

What I thought was that I was better than everybody else due to the fact I had the absolute Truth and THEY didn't.

My status with Jehovah was superior to the Armageddon-bait out there in the"world".

Out in service, if we passed a church we'd hold our noses and shout: "Goatshed!"

If that made me an intellectual I fear for the intelligentsia everywhere!

All I really was? A green bible Nerd in a cheap suit.
