How should I respond to a JW friend? (Australia)

Mr Monroe says "Summerinvincible's friend may find some satisfaction in knowing that they didn't predict Christ's return for 1914. That would mean they're not false prophets!"

So... why am I choosing that route of questioning?... I haven't replied to her yet because I was a bit confused by that!

Should I instead discuss the 16 separate wrong dates that MrMonroe mentioned? But then the excuse is "the light gets brighter".....

Or maybe I will go with JwFacts's article as a response to that... http://www.jwfacts.com/watchtower/light-gets-brighter.php

Not the whole thing, because that will scare her, but just mention some key points from it....

    Hmm! What do you think?

    summer,
Ooff the subject but my friend in Australia told me that her congregation read a letter to the members (In Toowoomba) that all cases of child abuse (Molesting) or if they knew of a child molester in the congregation, should be reported to the proper authorities..I questioned her on it as no one else had read the letter and that wasn't their usualy practice..(I also showed her samples in the Watchtowers) .

Apparently that elders daughter had been molested and he wanted all cases reported from then on. She wouldn't say if it was another brother or not that did the molesting, I was assuming so because of the way the letter was worded.

That's when she commented that Jehovah would judge their hearts..

Mr Monroe says "Summerinvincible's friend may find some satisfaction in knowing that they didn't predict Christ's return for 1914. That would mean they're not false prophets!"

How do you arrive at that conclusion Mr Monroe?

The WT claims Christ returned in 1914, therefore if they had predicted it, that would score them a point. Not predicting it, when it did happen (according to them) is nothing to skite about. Giving it's followers the impression that they did predict it correctly, when they did nothing of the kind, is dishonest, and I want her to do the research to find that out. I also want her to have to admit that she doesn't know as much about the WT's history as she thought she did.

I want her researching her church's history and finding all of the times they got it wrong all by herself, not being slapped in the face with it from an obviously apostate source.

Ok so.. They say they predicted Christ's return in 1914, and it was 'invisible', so that's why they are correct? (Sorry, I'm obviously a bit slow...)

But you're saying they actually DIDN'T predict Christ's return in 1914.

In the document you quoted from, a couple of pages after that quote, there's a paragraph which says "They also came to understand that it was in the year 1914 that Christ's invisible presence has begun...." etc - so she'll probably give me that as her answer. Although I guess it shows that they didn't actually PREDICT it, they "came to understand" it.... There's a difference, but I'm not sure if she'll see the relevance.

before 1914 they said Christ return will occur, after 1914 they said Christ returned invisible. Also regarding 1874 look up under sub heading

Did the Watchtower predict 1914 or 1874?

If you go for full attack mode, she will cry "Apostate!" and run away from you. At best you can lure her into a discussion where she will repeat the lame excuses the literature provides.

Tell her that you get a cultish vibe from the handouts.. and try to draw parallels with other cults. Or highlight the parts where certain cultish control is exerted. Like run away from the evil world, worldly people are evil, only we can save you (environmental control, fear) etc. etc.

before 1914 they said Christ return will occur,

Wrong ....... before 1914 they said Christ's return had occurred in 1874

They say they predicted Christ's return in 1914, and it was 'invisible', so that's why they are correct?

Wrong .... That's what she said. I say to make her prove it, which she can't. She has a problem, I want her to solve it with as little help from you as possible. We can deal with her method of solving her problem when she does it.

At the moment stick with the literature she has sent you. Do not scare her off by providing her with information that she will know you have gotten from the big scary internet, which she knows is ridden with apostates and other minions of Satan.

Act stupid. Making mistakes with your questions is ok, unless those mistakes let her off the hook. Remember what your hook is at all times.
