    I also agree with Nathan.

Continue to be friendly but don't hide the fact that you are looking for new employees. Your JW employees' loyalties lay with the WT first, you last. They may be sticking around for now because the economy is bad and it's hard to find a new job. But don't misread that as good intentions on their part. And don't wait until the ball is in their court to find out if they are going to screw you over.

Hiring new employees is a pain in the butt, but getting rid of our JW employees was the best thing we ever did for our business.

I suppose you should count on them finding empoyment elsewhere. If I we you, I'd begin interviewing new people for all five posistions immediately. Don't make it a secret. tell the current employees that you are planning for future expansion and unexpected contingencies.

Sorry, but I think this is bad advice. Any hint that YOU are thinking of replacing THEM because of the religious situation could be made to look like discrimination. (Assuming you are in the US.)

I would meet with each one of them individually; express that you understand this may or may not be an issue for THEM, but it IS NOT for YOU; explain that you feel they are valuable, dependable employees; and that you intend to keep business separate from the religion, and that you will respect their position to keep it all on a "professional" level (and especially if you can buffer your one-on-one contact with them).

Tell them that if THEY feel they can no longer work for YOU, that you would appreciate the courtesy of a reasonable notice, and that you would of course, be honest in giving them an excellent referral/recommendation to any new employer who would inquire about them.

In this economy, if I was one of them, I would be working things out in my mind as to how to explain or defend keeping my job there.

DesirousOfChange - I agree with what you wrote. But do you honestly think that JW employees will go against the elder body and continue to work for a DF'd person? They may be able to bend the rules while there are no other jobs to be had... but when the economy picks up again, they will be expected to find other employment. And where will that leave oompa?

There are plenty of good, reliable, out-of-work people right now. They are there for the picking. Right now, oompa probably has some really good choices if he were to hire someone else. On the other hand, when the economy picks up, the JW employees take off, the best of the unemployeed quickly find jobs, and oompa is left in a bind.

An uneven relationship is at work here: if you fire them, you'll be sued (and they'd be WT heroes at the next assembly). If they quit, you can't do a thing about it (and they'd be WT heroes at the next assembly). The only way they look bad to the WT is if they stick around to support their families (as they should), and you don't mistreat them because of their religion (as you should). The WT discourages good christian behavior!

The really crazy part is this: to anyone who's lived in the WT Society rabbit hole, this all seems normal!

Is there a reason I'm not thinking of that Oompa couldn't simply ask each employee if they plan to change the business relationship or have changed their long-term plans with the company?

Sure, they might not give an honest answer - but some might, and it might provide an insight into what the employees are thinking. I know the WT is evil and JW's are the scum of the Earth here - but heck, one of the companies I contract for involves working for a JW (just the way it worked out), they know I'm an ex-JW, and we work together just fine.

A lot of JW's I know seem to accept that taking everything suggestion the WT makes at face value would be unreasonable.

Do you need an accountant? I'm out of work and if I can do it remotely I'd jump on it.

I don't care if you're DF'd. No, actually I think that is a good recommendation for you as an employer.

If people could work from home offices elsewhere there are many here who love to work for you! me included.

My thought exactly! I've done lots of work by remote: marketing, customer service, writing, etc., and am now looking for work. I also agree with the suggestion of cross training your existing non-jw employees. That way if the jws want to quit, let them quit.

It seems to me that you are in the position of power.

I agree with jgnat. You're the boss and it's in your very best interests to treat them 'fairly and without prejudice' to borrow that legal phrase. If they leave, let it be because of their own 'consciences' rather than anything you do.

I was in a not dissimilar position a few years ago: I was the Principal Psychologist in an agency whose cleaning services were provided by JWs. When I was appointed the PP position, I half-expected the JWs to be either impolite or scurrying away whenever I was around. Neither happened. They were very civil - and even friendly! - to me. I acted with utmost professionalism and even provided a written referee's report when one of them requested one from me (for another part time job). BTW, they were excellent cleaners!

    Nathan sez:

You may discover that some of these people will now be plotting against you, undermining your business or trying to go into business for themselves using your customers as their new business base. If so, fire them immediately - no two week notice BS - and get them off your premises ASAP.

I would seriously consider doing exactly as he suggests because you are a piece of sh*t in the minds of your JW employees and their god will approve of them WRECKING YOUR BUSINESS because you have LEFT Jerhover.

I would put all 5 of them on notice first thing in the morning that you are planning for future expansion before they do to much damage to you and your business.

DO NOT MENTION ANYTHING ABOUT YOUR SPIRITUAL RELATIONSHIP WITH THEM.

Emphasize that you are planning for furture expansion.

They can't sue you for that.

If they think you are attempting to replace them because of the WTBTS they will sue you for religious discrimination and win.

Let them ask you if they are planning to let them go. The ones who ask are the ones you can probably count on staying.
