@Moshe - 11 kids!!!
I think you are right about no invites. I would bet that poor mom seriously needed an invite or two just to reconnect with the rest of the world. My mom did and she only had 4 of us.

Most of the answers here are from people who were witnesses in the 80's and 90's. I was a witness since 1950. They started clamping down big time in the early 1970's when they thought they were like the Jews ready to enter the promised land (1975) They felt they had to clean everything up. Smoking became a disfellowshipping offence. Necking and petting became a committee matter. Types of movies were censored. Certain sexual acts between married couples were explicitly forbidden. Teen drinking also became a serious offence.
None of this has really stopped. It just drives the youth away.
Yup, apparently, helping others was very strictly controlled in my last congregation, the one I was abandoned out of.
I had taken the lead (bad bad sister!) to ask people if they wanted to learn ASL.
They did! And they knew it was to help me.
They wanted to do this.
Problem was that we had to have elder okay on it.
Four loooong months later, the answer came back: "NO! WE ARE NOT OR EVER WILL PLAN TO HAVE A SIGN LANGUAGE GROUP HERE, THEREFORE, WE ARE NOT ASKING PEOPLE TO LEARN SIGN LANGUAGE."
That is an exact copy of a text I received on my phone from the PO, who was along with all the other elders black.
There's the racism, again, as pointed out in another thread.
The ones who got help were black only and were known for a very long time in the congregation.
I was new and believed in helping myself first before asking for help.
In other words, I tried to take care of my own needs by organizing my own interpreting services before asking for help to do it.
Good god almighty, but the elders really wanted the sisters to be helpless little poor lambs.
NOT ME! I was too responsible to be that neeeeedy.
I can't stand this stupid religion. Now that the BS has gone away, no one hardly does anything and this has become a religion of socially retarded people. I can't stand it anymore and my kids won't have to suffer the lack of social interaction.
