The whole NGO thing.

If there was nothing objectionable (from a WT point of view) about WT being an NGO, why did they withdraw their membership after the UK press shed light upon the fact?

The NGO thing was one of the major contributors to making me wake up and question the WTS. When I discussed this with the circuit overseer he basically agreed that he wasn't happy about it but it was something he had overcome...then he gave me a whole load of copies of bulls**t letters that were released to the congregations to explain it all away...they were such a load of crap...and yet many buy into the excuses...some people just don't want to see it because its too challenging I suppose.

Here is a link to one of the older posts on here that sheds a bit of light on how the NGO's are answerable to the UN.

I recommend having a look at a few of the other old posts about it...some interesting info.

Somewhere in the Best of there is a thread that talks about what else they got besides a library card.

One that really struck me was that they were able to use UN planes or helicopters to ship WT publications into places where they would not normally be allowed to go.

I'll see if I can find it.

OK I found what I was looking for.

The WTS published a small booklet called Mission to Africa. It talks about how Witnesses in Europe were aware of the problems in Africa during the wars and how many refugees were living in camps with nothign to use to take care of themselves.

    The info says:

This pamphlet is printed and distributed by the Watchtower. However, many Jehovah's Witnesses have never seen this brochure. Please pay close attention to page 9. The 1998 Yearbook, pages 44-45, informs us of the following:

Many in the world recognize Jehovah’s Witnesses as lawabiding, family-oriented people who have high moral and ethical standards and who are actively preaching the message of God’s Word. However, there are also people who oppose our work and will stop at nothing to besmirch the reputation of Jehovah’s people and to hinder our efforts to let the light shine. They do this by providing government officials and the media with inaccurate, lying, and disparaging information about Jehovah’s Witnesses. In an effort to correct such misrepresentation, in February 1997 the Governing Body approved the formation, under the oversight of the Writing Committee, of a Public Affairs Office. General information desks have been functioning in the Society’s branch offices.

    Disaster Relief

One way that we publicly demonstrate goodwill toward our neighbors is by our active involvement in relief efforts during times of disaster. For example, for people in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire), a team, all of whom are Jehovah’s Witnesses, organized humanitarian aid in 1997. With the help of thousands of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Belgium, France, and Switzerland, refugees were supplied with tons of food, clothing, vitamin products, and medicine, as well as 18,500 pairs of shoes and 1,000 blankets, all of which was airlifted to Africa. The value of the supplies provided totaled nearly $1 million (U.S.). These supplies were sent primarily as a gift to Jehovah’s Witnesses, but they were also shared with others.—Gal. 6:10.

Now what is interesting in regard to the UN is wll into the booklet on page 9:

Our activity was often hindered by difficulties particular to the region. Distances are vast and lines of communication almost nonexistent. The best form of travel, if not the only one, is the airplane. Often we used the H.C.R.'s (United Nations High Commission for Refugees) planes.

Say what? Because of their status as an NGO they got to use UN airplanes to deliver supples to people in Zaire. Otherwiuze they never would have been allowed to get their supplies in and we can all be very sure they had a lot of reading material in them

Not included in the booklet but added to the pdf file is the following:

    WT-94-1-1p.-6

A missionary writes: “Concerning our brothers who found themselves in refugee camps in Tete Province, an interesting observation was made by a representative of UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.) He said that Jehovah’s Witnesses had organized their own camps, separate from other groups. ‘Their camp,’ he said, ‘was the only one that was properly run,’ adding, ‘Jehovah’s Witnesses are clean, organized, and educated.’ He then offered to take me by plane across the bush to see for myself.

    Awake-2001-7-22p.-9

One UNHCR official in the Democratic Republic of Congo was so pleased with the orderliness of the relief efforts carried out by the Witnesses that she put her vehicle at the disposal of the volunteers.

    WT-2003-2-15-p.-8

We were shown where to cut trees and collect grass to use in building our own small house. We made mud bricks. The UNHCR gave us a plastic sheet that we put on the roof. It was hard work, but we were happy when our simple home was ready.”

Notice how often they are mentioning the UN?

On the pro JW site they said that when the society signed and joined as an NGO there were no requirements to pledge that you will uphold the ideals of the UN etc etc.

    Oh really?

    Paul Hoeffel disagreed:

Yea the UN was so tired of answering letters and calls about the WTS' membership they had a form letter made and had it posted on their website for the longest time. I think they finally took it down but it was up there for years

The letter proves they had to do somethign to show they supported the ideals of the UN so they published a few little things and it went right over the heads of most JWs

The significance of all of it is that they allied themselves with the beast something which any JW would be DFed for. Then they lied about it. They knew exactly what was required when they signed up. And it wasn't for any library card. If you go to any library you can get them to send you the info you are looking for through interlibrary loans. Even if they can't send youy a whole book they can reference the material or tell you where or how you can get it locally.

.... and according to Dana Loytved, the Senior Reference Librarian:

"The issuance of a library pass is independent of NGO status or any other status. There has been no change in the library pass policy in general; however, please be advised that, as a consequence of the September 11 attacks, no library passes are being issued for the time being while the security situation at the UN is being studied."
