Happy Birthday!
I love birthdays because it's a chance to do something really special for someone on their special day.
For me never being allowed to celebrate anything, holidays and birthdays are especially...special to me.
I was a wound up spring that sprung:D
Happy Birthday Aussie, belated Happy Birthday to JWFacts, and future Happy Birthday Beks! I keep my birthday low key, because all I want is to left alone with no responsibility for the day. The kids get me a few trinkets, and my husband gets take out for dinner and a cake. I sit on my ass and read or watch movies, and that makes me happy.
I find that all my new friends and family, although not 'doing' anything for me on that day as such, say the most wonderful things.

"Happy birthday!!!! 49 years young! Hope you are having a smashing day even if birthdays are unexciting;) very pround to call you my brother in law mister. Kiss that wife of yours for me...I'm so happy **** has you, your'e like two halves of a whole, can't imagine you not being there now!"
she made me teary eyed.
friends and family mean more on that day than a party thats for sure!

I did nothing on my birthday either, but that was my choice. Just to be lazy and do nothing! It was awesome, lol.
I am sorry though, because you wish you did have more. You should do it for yourself if you want to. I went to the spa one year... set it up and all that myself. No need to wait on others if you want to do something. Throw your own party, even, if you want one. There are no rules!
My son is turning 13 this year, and doesn't want a party either. I offered. He just wants me to take him to see that movie, Real Steel. No WT influence there. Some people just aren't into b-day parties. (which is not to say that he is not into the gifts that come with b-days)

Happy Birthday to you Aussie. I know; I didnt really do anything for mines this year, either. I took the day off, enjoyed my own company, watched movies, and drank wine. Sometimes you can be your own best company ;)
Oh, and I was gonna add: Sometimes doing nothing is the best thing to do ;)
You must always do at least one special thing for yourself on your birthday..it's in the ex JW's laws..

Heya Oz. I just found this thread, so, just like in real life earlier today, a belated happy birthday to ya, little bro.. I enjoyed our chat on the phone.
I hear you on the 'no big deal' thing.. birthdays are a hard habit to get into, after escaping from the Borg.
However, next year, we'll definitely have to make a big deal of your 50th..
