I live in the Pacific Northwest and in the last week I have started to see bill boards popping up all over the city with pictures of people who are doctors, stay at home mom's, lawyers, plumbers, etc. They all look very normal just living life and below their picture it says I am a Mormon.

I have also started in just the last few days to see commercials on TV showing a soccer mom running her kids to games and she stops to look at the camera and says I am a Mormon, or they showed a doctor who stops and says I am a Mormon.

I think this campaign with the Mormons has to do with Mitt Romney.

Has anyone else noticed this? I wonder what the GB would do to make the JW's look normal, as our kids do not do school sports, we do not go to college so we do not have many doctors or lawyers, or even plumbers and electricians, etc for that matter. I know what they could do, show a guy washing window's who stops and smiles at the camera and says I am a Jehovah's Witnesses. I have never been to college but I have read years of Watchtowers and Awakes. Because of this I have a better education then you could ever get at any university. I am an elder who counselors people on all matters of life from miner stuff like dating to the more serious stuff like sexual child abuse to spousal abuse. We are the happy religion, the only true religion.

So anywho has anyone else seen these adds.

I have not seen any over here......Perhaps it is to do with your coming election..

Mind you, we have been getting the TV series "Big Love"...Does that count?

We've had them in NY on TV for a while already. The GB should spend a billion or so on similar ads to improve their image.

This very subject came up on the Ferrari board. Seems like the TV ads are more common in the west part of the country. I commented that I have seen a lot of sidebar ads here on JWN (at least in the past) like "Hi, I make home-made pottery in my back yard and I am a Mormon"...

We have four or five active members who are Mormons, and they deny that it has anything to do with Romney (for whatever that is worth).

They say that this is an attempt to "normalize" the Mormon religion in the eyes of non-Mormons, to make them seem less strange or cult-like. One admitted that current Mormon leadership is somewhat obsessed with trying to make the Mormon culture seem "normal" to ordinary Americans. Quite the opposite of JW leadership, who seem dead-set on making their people look as weird as they possibly can be.

An interesting point made by one Mormon was that in the past, they usually insisted their ads say "Church of Latter-Day Saints", while these new ads are actively stating Mormon without referring to the formal name.

My cynical personal opinion is that this must have at least some indirect tie-in to the attention brought on the Mormon church by the Romney candidacy. Past Mormon politicos like Romney Sr., Harry Reid or Orrin Hatch somehow did not get as much scrutiny as Mitt has seen.

Yes they are really on a race to win folks to the Mormons.

But it sounds like the WT is going to compete with them,
they have purchased a great peice of land & are intending to
have basketball courts ,tennis courts swimming pools, sounds
like they are going to entrap folks like the Mormons are.
That what part of what Rick was talking about in his talk.
He said it may NOT be true, but by some of the talk going around
it might be. TIME!!!! will tell

I have noticed pop-up notices here on JWN for several months. I have notice popups on other sites I go to for the last year. I think it is part of their way to find possible converts not necessarily with the election.

The main LDS church no longer practices polygamy, so Big Love is just the non-LDS focusing on the extreme.

The creators of South Park had come out with a Broadway play called the Book of Mormon.

If it is as good as the one on Scientology, then I will not want to miss it if it makes it to TV.

Actually, it does occur to me that if the Mormons really want to look more "normal", maybe a complete rewrite of the unbelievably obtuse legend of how Joseph Smith obtained the Book of Mormon would be in order.

They're also diversifying apparently... for example, I understand selling home security systems (APX?) probably to pay for all their expensive advertising spots... maybe the WT will consider similar ventures to pay for similar advertising... if they do, they should rehire all the laid off bethelites...

The Mormons have never assumed the "vows of poverty" that is expected of JWs - I think they may have been pioneers of American-style "big blessings materially through religion" style of money-through-faith evangelism which is popular today.
