If the GB was done away with.....the JW's wouldn't know who to pray about.

Whoever controls what goes in the publications controls JWs.
As long as a change gets published, it's "the truth," "new light," "meat in due season from Jehovah," etc.

As long as religion exists, and there are many, and the laws of the lands permit these freedoms, the GB will always exist.
It's the fault of the ones who allow it to go on.
Why is drug trafficking a problem? Because there are people interested in buying drugs, and will risk a lot to get them.

I doubt that anyone in the Watchtower, Inc has enough concentrated power to get rid of them. It would take a shyster lawyer to pull that off, which Rutherford did. His example is instructive.
I also doubt that any group within the Watchtower would want to formally get rid of the Governing Bozos because they are an important facade needed for maintaining power. There have been rumors that Kim Jong Ill was once thinking of giving power to someone else after he dies, rather than his useless sons but supposedly the generals said no. They want to maintain control and need a dynasty figure for that. I think the GB is a similar situation.
All that said, they could simply become irrelevant as the organization crumbles. God Speed to that.

There would still have to be a person, or entity in charge, to control the rank and file jws. The religion couldn't exist without them. If you did away with the GB, someone just as corrupt would take their place.

They may be "done away with" in countries that continue to "persecute" them. They will just go underground as they did for years where they were banned. If Australia really launches a full fledged "attack" on the organization, it could packup and leave without any great impact. How many JWs in Australia anyway? How much property value that couldn't be sold and money sent abroad before any real legal action could do great financial harm? The legal system is slow.
There are only a handful of countries that have over 100,000 JWs -- what maybe 15 or 20? Only the US has over 1 million. (15%) Those 15 or 20 countries probably amount to 50% or more of the total JWs. (And likely a larger percentage of financial resources.) The majority of resources held by WTS are most likely sheltered in countries with more favorable legal protection such as the US. Liquidation of real property will generate cash that cannot be so easily confiscated and can more easily be hidden and protected.
Some "persecution" would likely be a good thing for growth. The worldwide flock has become lethargic and filled with apathy. Overall hours in the field ministry may be "up", but we all know that such numbers are ficticious. More house spent "windshielding" and gossipping or in drinking cappuccinos at Starbucks than in knocking on doors, but it's all counted the same on the monthly time slip. Even with 1.6billion hours reported, national average is down everywhere in western nations. Meeting attendance is at all time low records.
YES! WHAT IS NEEDED FOR NEW GROWTH AND RENEWED EXCITEMENT IS PERSECUTION!
See Revelation 12:13-17.

Makes you wonder where these guys came from, to start with ... picked by holy spirit my a$$!
I'd like to have been a fly on the wall in those back-room deals, to hear what really went on! Who owed who a favor! Payback time.
What were we all thinking before waking up? I don't know exactly.
Some airy fairy story ... rub-a-dub-dub some men in a tub? Kinda misty and foggy like, nothing too clear ... that would spoil the illusion!
OMG, what dopes we were! Thank dog the fog has lifted!

I don't think most of the guys on the current GB could survive prison, most of them are a bunch of limp-wristed cowards. But then again, maybe King David and his pals might actually enjoy being somebody's bitch ;-P

I'm sure the Governing Body thinks that the elaborate corporate structure of the organization protects them from liability. That may have been the original intention. However, it could have the opposite effect if the different corporations decide to place the blame on the Governing Body to shield themselves from liability.
It might normally be hard to get rid of the Governing Body, but if they are convicted of crimes against children, then it could be a great excuse for them to be given up and the rest of the organization could have a fresh start. They could remove the penalties for blood transfusions and for not shunning disfellowshipped people. (This could be done by letters to the elders. They wouldn't even have to notify anybody else.)
If a small fraction leave, they could attribute this to the effects of apostasy and then liquidate some Kingdon Halls for some fast cash. I think most would brag about how wrongdoing is eventually handled in Jehovah's organization, even if it means removing members of the Governing Body.
