If the GB were all arrested, they would claim it is persecution and further proof that Armageddon is coming any day now.
I think that the present arrangement of the GB has to change in the future. Currently one has to be of the anointed to be a member of the GB. But as time goes by and if the end has not came within 30 years, then a completely new GB made up of non-anointed will have to be formed or the WT corporation will replace the GB.
Ding is right. If they were arrested for example in the Unthank case thay will cry persecution and point to the similarities in 1918 with Rutherford and the gang.
The only way you could cause a schism is if the members of the writing committee and legal teams decided that they don't need the Governing Body anymore. In truth they probably don't. The GB is nothing more than old figureheads anyway. Legal could concievably get together with the writing dept. and decide that the blood doctrine needs to be "adjusted", that shunning is unscriptural, and adjust the policies regarding child molesters. They could in one fell swoop, elimnate many of the legal liabilities while at the same time using the Governing Body as scapegoats. Presto chango a new friendlier version of JW's.

I don't see the GB being "done away with" but I could envsion them letting themselves die off without replacements (20-30 years and they're all gone). They would need to revise some doctrine but they'll have to revise doctrine by then anyway. My speculation follows:
Fifty years from now the doctrine will be that the 1000 years began in 1914 and that rather than the "old light" understanding of two separate Armageddon-like events (one to kick off the 1000 years and one after the 1000 years), there is just one at the end of the 1000 years. They'll also have to change "the rest of the dead didn't come to life until the 1000 years had ended" scripture to literal instead of figurative, since there is obviously no resurrection going on right now.
This will bring up the issue of what to use as a stick without an Armageddon imminent. Here is what it will be: the lake of fire. Anyone who leaves the Borg during the 1000 years has NO HOPE for a resurrection. Anyone who rejects "the good news" during the 1000 years has NO HOPE for a resurrection. ONLY faithful JWs who DIE FAITHFUL during the 1000 years have hope for a resurrection (along with everyone who died prior to 1914).
See? It's all laid out for them. They'll perpetuate the Borg indefinitely with this scenario (or one something like it). How does this relate to the GB? Well, they (along with ALL 144K anointed) will have been resurrected to heaven and ruling from there. On earth, the Watchtower will set up some sort of administrative hierarchy that are "the princes" representing the Borg interests on earth. It will be GB-like, but with less prestige and absolutely no power over the organization, which will be corporate-run in reality.
As long as they never visit Australia, they are safe, regardless of arrest warrants. When I first heard there was a GB, I was shocked b/c single individuals always dominated during my time. I'm curious as to what happened. It must be unwieldly with a group. My concern is not with the organizational stuff but the theology. It is closed so we have no clue what they discuss. Perhaps they are mere figureheads and don't even meet.
The religion is very deferential and authoritarian. The form of totalitarianism does not matter. They can cross normal boundaries regardless of business or leadership form. Certainly, some GB members have more power than others.

The big difference is that back in 1918 it was because of the WTS being anti-war.......today, it would more about the WTS being pro-pedophile.
Think About It
Good Point Think about it.
The marked difference between 1918 and now won't stop them from making that comparison though. They would still spin it as the Government trying to stop their work in Australia by using in their way of viewing it, obscure, unfair, and inapplicable laws to restrict the work.
Why should the WT compromise and obey the government the way Babylon The Great does just because the safety of children may be at stake?

The GB has been in charge almost 40 years. Ray Franz explains how it rose to power in Crisis of Conscience. The pdf is quite reasonably priced and a lot of libraries have it.
