How to convince someone to question the authority of the WT

    I would try a different tack and ask her if she wasn't a witness what would she see herself doing and what ambitions would she have fulfilled? Get her to think about what the religion does to people and the impact it has on their lives.

    Ask her why she never pursued any of her ambitions? Why can people of other faiths maintain their beliefs whilst at the same time using their skills to the full?

    If the ministry is so important why do most witnesses spend less then 10hrs a month on the ministry and still do nothing to improve their lives? If the majority of witnesses do not fully commit to their beliefs why should I?

    Hi Lana! If she enjoys in-depth discussions, then take her to Luke 21:8. This was the clincher for me. We had a great discussion/thread on this scripture a few days ago. Take a look and see if it will help:

    Let us know how it goes! Best wishes!

    Thanks yall. I'm not trying to convert her to my beliefs at all--not at this point.... I just want her to question what she believes. While I am a Christian, I don't believe my beliefs hinder my life, those I love, my work, etc. It's not restrictive in the same sense as JW.

    If the JW holds the bibel dear, which they should, then:

    Psalm 146: 3-4

    3 Do not put your trust in princes,

    in mortal men, who cannot save.

    4 When their spirit departs, they return to the ground;

    on that very day their plans come to nothing.

    AS per the NWT:

    3 Do not put YOUR trust in nobles,
    Nor in the son of earthling man, to whom no salvation belongs.

    4 His spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground;
    In that day his thoughts do perish.

    The buildup of cognitive dissonance is powerful. It's what got me to finally see The Truth about The "Truth" (TTATT).

    There are many things that can take a person there, but ultimately as long as a JW has "faith and trust" in the organization then they'll accept all sorts of contradictory evidence. The foundational doctrine is that the WTBTS is "God's Organization". If you can expose that for the lie it is, then everything else will fall like dominoes.

    We had a good discussion about this subject here:

    MrFreeze - Keep in mind that the WT tries its best to create a division/difference between "directed by God's spirit" and "inspired". They claim that bible writers were "inspired" therefore they got nothing wrong. But today...no one is inspired. But the GB is "directed by God's spirit". Which basically means that God is still leading them and only them....but since they aren't "inspired".....you can't point the finger at them when they are wrong.

    The more I learn the more I realize that Steven Hassan's method of releasing a witness from the mental bonds they are in is the only way to accomplish freeing someone from this cult.

    Read "Releasing the Bonds" by Hassan and you'll understand why your friend simply won't see any logical points you try to make.

    How did you get convinced that JW was a cult??

    Eventually some people stop enjoying the sadistic spiritual abuse and seek help. The "convincing", I believe, can only come from within.

    Also, read Captives of Concept by Don Cameron. It will explain fully why the JW believes so deeply in their irrational teachings. It is because they are captive to teh concept that the men at the top of the organization (the governing body) were given authority by Jesus himself....and all others are to listen and be obedient.

    Is your family member an enthusiastic recent convert, or a long term , even born-in? If a long term Witness then they have long term friends, social groups, and probably elders that they really admire. The very idea that all of that can be wrong is very hard to accept. Logical argument is one thing but emotional ties to the life that you have always know is another thing - loyalty and all.

    So many of them just do not want it to be wrong, to lose the hope of Paradise and start over in the outside world is something they will try to avoid at all costs.

    Sometimes it takes a special event or a problem to shake their foundations . Then they may be ready to listen.
