    What LWT said.

Actually, (I'm inactive only), we are weak and therefore bad association in their eyes.

As frustrating, insulting, and disrespectful as it is int he real world, it's perfectly understandable in the "cult world."

I quit! said something to me that stuck in my head when I was telling him about the loss of friendship. He said, "they were friends with who they wanted you to be." I'm going to use this with every JW that crosses my path.

OK, this seems to work on our desktop.

In 1977 I made the decision to go on to college. My dearest friend in the congregation told me that if I did, she would "mark" me. She wasn't the only one...instant pariah. I hadn't broken a single Biblical rule. I was a very good Witness girl. But I was definitely marked.

I made some really wonderful friends in college and I often thought about the scriptures where Jesus was asked how to identify the true religion and his answer was, basically, "they love one another". (Not going to drag my NWT out to look up the exact wording). I thought that if that was the ultimate benchmark, the Witnesses weren't "it".

Going to higher education is considered taboo to "strong, faithful" jws. Though you can't get df for it, you become "worldly bad association". Inactivity also brings up danger flags of association to the faithful jw.

There is a difference in being shunned officially because one is d/f'd or just viewed as a "bad association" because you are "no longer in the truth"

The latter is not official, another dub might be prepared to be friendly. It is a personal thing

"Inactive" means "weak" - some may want to help you get stronger, others may avoid you so the ilk doesn't get on their nice clothes. Now, as long as a person keeps his mouth shut and takes whatever bones are thrown to him, a few will acknowledge the existence of a "weak" one from time to time.

Then there are those that really like to talk about truth - that's when you cross the line and become an apostate..... someone very, very dangerous and not weak at all.

Most people are very easily manipulated into doing just about anything, that's just the sad reality of the human condition.

I have a family member who still believes in the "truth" but is shunned by his sister and parents for being inactive.

I am being somewhat shunned, I was never baptised and never registered for kingdom school but I was a beliver for 27 years, but thanks to the elders manual which I accidently chain emailed to the "brothers" and "sisters" including an elder.

    Such are simply personal decisions

They are so controlled. They have no more "personal" decisioning ability than a puppet.

Hopefully, your dad can find another music group to jam with soon.

As one who is DF I can tell you there is a big differance on how thy treat a marked one and one who is DF. Good christians feel that they are nice to people and eat shit relatively often. So when they dont have to be nice they can dish it out in hefty portions. And go far beyoond the writen word.

Not too long ago there was a rag saying not to trust your own brothers and a description of those you shouldn't trust. Anyone who wants to disect WT blurb should be treated with suspicion.

The only honorable way out is to forget to get baptised, then make them feel that they have to pretend that they are not cult members. The big problem is getting immature teenagers to get that first step right.
