Cofty, even with the "best" of Drs, they are only human as we are, and you did the absolutly best thing you can do. You took charge and asked the questions that needed to be asked. In doing so you may have now been able to catch something early enough to eliminate it. Scary as it is, be confident in your ability to know your own body. Close to the surface is a good thing. I will pray they remove all that little bugger and either find it begnin, and/or not find anything else. I agree about the PET scan, it is quite helpful.

I hope I can be as aggressive as you are if something like that ever comes up with my own health. That is the single most impportant thing we can remember when doing to Drs, WE know our body and not to take NO as any answer when we don't feel it is the correct answer. Just keep asking the good questions until a satisfactory answer emerges.

I admore you for that :)

Thanks for all the encouragement. I have a few PMs to catch up on, sorry for the delay I will reply this evening.

George - Middle of p16 I wrote about my meeting with the oncologist on Friday. Waiting on referral to thoracic surgeon now.

Up to now my treatment has been 1st class but it shows that it's good to be proactive in your treatment.

    Absolutely!

So it is a great thing that you have been proactive. Because doctors, no matter how good, do miss things... paperwork, images, older scans (such as in your case), etc. Sometimes things go missing, because someone else is 'supposed to take care of that'.

A relative of mine found out he had cancer in an offhand manner from the receptionist. Here, you are not supposed to call for your results of tests... they will call you if there is any concern. However, six months after his test... he went in for a routine appointment and the receptionist asked about his cancer. He was... 'what cancer?'

No one had called to tell him the results of his tests from six months earlier. What a way to find out!

Needless to say, he got in very quick for treatment that would have taken longer in normal situations.

At least now you can get immediate treatment, rather than waiting. Hope everything goes well for you!

    And happy anniversary from yesterday!

    Peace,

    tammy

I had a consultation with the thoracic surgeon yesterday.

The short version is as follows..

The lump in my lung is approx 7mm across so it is too small for a needle biopsy and a PET scan would not be useful.

He says it's "probably" a secondary tumour but the only way to find out is to remove it and ask the pathologists.

There does not seem to be any clinical advantage in removing it sooner rather than later - ie 6 months or so from now, but he would favour operating in the next couple of weeks. The down side of that is that it's not the trivial operation I thought it was.

I need more info from my oncologist about what would happen next if it is metastatic. Difficult decisions ahead.

So sorry to hear that Bill, Difficult decision right enough. I hope the oncologist is proactive with the steps you should take so you can look at all the options. Thinking of you. HOTB x

Sorry to hear you are going to have to go through this. I really hope it is not metastasis.

why is the operation not trivial? <apologies - don't take this as trivialising your situation!>
