Cofty, I'm sorry about your tough decision. Will be keeping you in my thoughts.

Question: If there's no clinical advantage, why has the surgeon opted to operate in the next 2 weeks? What is the reason? Has he discussed with you the benefit of surgery now rather than later?

I thought the op would be out of hospital same day and 2 or 3 days off but he is talking 4 or 5 days in and 4 to 6 weeks off. That doesn't appeal at the moment.

As far as I can tell the only advantage of removing it soon is for the certainty of knowing what it is. I need to know what the plan would be after that.

cofty - I need more info from my oncologist about what would happen next if it is metastatic. Difficult decisions ahead.

Hi cofty, It is your body, so do as much research as you need to get answers for your questions. Best of wishes with recovering from the cancer.

Peace be with you and everyone, who you love,

    Robert

The sooner you know what it is, the sooner you can get on with dealing with it. What ever it is.

    Sorry to hear this, cofty.

strypes is right - the sooner you know what it is, the sooner you can start treatments if it needs treating. Putting it off for six months might mean that it's a 1.5 cm 'thing' instead of a 7 mm one, and the possibility of having others crop up in the interim.

So you're looking at just under a week in hospital after surgery, and 5-6 weeks of recuperation time after that. It's not a holiday, that's for sure, but you'll have precious time with the people you care about, before going back to the usual stuff.

If you were closer, I'd teach you how to knit some kick-ass stuff... hats, socks, flying spaghetti monsters...

Hey Cofty - hope everything works out well and I'm sure it will. My sister had lung cancer 2 years ago - had the needle biopsy and then was in for surgery a week later. She came through the surgery great but then an unnoticed type of ulcer burst and was leaking into her system poisoning her and so within a day of lung surgery they rushed her back in to the OR for stomach surgery. She swore the lung surgery isn't what did her in but the 2nd surgery - go figure. She's been cancer free since then - good luck and best wishes! sammieswife

Thanks for the kind words. I have an appointment to see my oncologist tomorrow to discuss my options.

It appears there are only 2 ways to find out whether it's metastatic tumour or an innocent lump. One is to wait 6 months and have another CT scan to see if it has grown and whether there are more lumps. The other is to let the thoracic surgeon do his thing and then ask the pathologist.

I need to know for sure whether or not there is any clinical reason to choose option 1 and if it is a tumour what next? I was taken off chemo last time because it was damaging my otherwise super-healthy heart.

I have to ring the thoracic surgeon by Monday to let him know what I decide.

My onco is retiring and apparently I will be his last appointment tomorrow. Hope he doesn't start celebrating too soon. I need to write stuff down this time.

I grew up thinking I would live forever.

Sorry too much info. Writing it helps me but if I was you I doubt I would look forward to reading this ongoing saga. Thanks for letting me waffle. Now to click "sumbit" or "cancel"?
