    Therapy,

What are considered the minimum qulifications to become a therapist? In marriage counseling it is a Master's degree in Social Work. For the treatment of mental problems and the mentally ill, there are two categories, Clinical Psychologists and Psychiatrists. For a Clinical Psychologist, this includes at least four years of education beyond an undergraduate degree along with an intership. In Psychiatry, this includes a medical degree and appropriate education in the choosen specialty. Besides, the formal education, there are state exams that must be passed after one completes the formal education.

How does that compare to the educational requirements of the elders who are called upon to handle complex, human problems? Well, I don't think I have to answer that, now do I.

Excellent points, larc. I've never met one elder with the qualifications you mention. The only qualification, if one wants to call it that, is spewing forth WT doctrine.

In speaking myself with various health professionals Larc, I have brought this subject up, highlighting the amount of room for error these guy's come to in the handling of such cases, and often the irrepairable damage which they inflict upon innocents within the congregations, of all ages.

When I was a child, I knew at 14 that something in me felt at odds, was out of sync. I requested of my parents to allow me to get an outside view on my condition, this of course, as was standard practice then, was completely 'sniffed' at. Why go and receive outside help from worldlings, when you can get the assistance required from the older, 'spiritually qualified' men, the elders.

This practice must have been highly illegal, if not, certainly a highly questionable response and action, i.e. disallowing that to take place, which is exactly what it was.

What is the position with this today in the organisation? Can children, minors and/or other receive psychological assistance if they feel they have a need for it, or is it still actively discouraged?

    Kind regards

    Larc,

The implications your post bring to mind cannot be overstated!

Just an interjection, from one who's been in therapy of all types and kinds for decades, and has been helped immensely by professionals in that field:

The only thing I've learned that is truly "therapeutic" and healing is Love. (Whatever that is, but you know what I mean I think.)

A therapist who can convey "love" appropriately and within a professional context is a healer. One who is clinical, detached, and "whatever" is not so great.

Elders, even without having to put on therapist hats, can be healers just by being loving. I've known quite a few who've been able to pull such a thing off, before they get completely burned out, that is.

The whole (denied, but undeniable) supposition that elders are to "shepherd" their congregations - even to the extent that they need to provide "therapy" in lieu of professionals - is so assanine that it doesn't even interest me to discuss it. On the other hand..............

They are supposedto be Loving. They are under Divine command to be loving. Children grow up believing that this stuff is REAL LIFE, and that they can expect lovingkindness from elders. Sometimes just a small thing, a caring gesture, a genuine listener taking the time to let the hurt one speak - is all that is needed to give a heart some rest.

The weird thing about the whole elder arrangement is that they somehow have taken it upon themselves, either collectively or by command from NY, to interfere with a whole lot of people's efforts to obtain professional therapy,

    AND

They don't know thing one about how to provide love, either.

They end up being abusers of power and screwers of people's minds. Of course this is just my little opinion.

p.s. all the above is general and not meant to be applicable to all situations in every place for every person whatever whatever whatever.

When I was an elder and was called upon to help those in the congregation with serious problems, such as serious depression, i always felt like an idiot. At least I had the brains to direct these ones to seek professional help, whereas most other elders prescribed 2 meetings and call me in the morning.
    It's a very sad situtation.

It goes well beyond being a sad situation. By the very instigations of the teachings espoused by the WT, these in fact of themselves can lead directly to depression related 'illnesses'. What it is, is downright dangerous, this practice.

Not knocking you at all Roy, but if you felt like a 'right idiot' in such matters, then I rest my case in point.

Completely ludicrous that this has been allowed to continue for so long now.

    Peace & kind regards

    Good points, Larc.

Hard to argue with facts like that, and you know how I like to argue.

Excellent viewpoint, my friend LL, but haven't we come to expect that from you?

One of the core components of true love is the acceptance of people just as they are, warts and all. Elders can indeed perform this essential – not to mention "simple" – feat. As you have seen, some do, especially those who don't powertrip or otherwise renege on their primary responsibility to shepherd.

Larc briefly outlined the level of training and study that medical professionals must complete before the State deems them competent to give help. Expecting members of the WTS who hold positions of leadership to attain those academic levels would be foolish. We know that isn't ever going to happen.

Still, any man, if he will, can show a merciful regard for others instead of a harsh insistence on adhering to written rules. Any man, if he will, can show love toward his fellow man and woman.

    If he will.

    Peace and good thoughts, LL.

JWs are constantly told that God himself gave the elders as counselors to them. They are also told that these elders speak for God. If they do not listen to them, obey them and follow their advice they will dissapoint God. Who more than God would know their problems and help them?

Elders are provided as spirit-appointed (only sounds like anointed) by God himself

    w97 3/1 28
JEHOVAH has provided overseers for his organization in this "time of the end." (Daniel 12:4)

Elders meet Scriptural requirements before being appointed by holy spirit

These men are not paid professionals.

Rather, they are "gifts in men," provided by Jehovah to help you.

    w86 9/15 10 - 3
Jehovah God promised to provide his people with counselors in our time.
This promise is fulfilled principally in the appointed elders in the Christian congregation. Counseling is a form of teaching, and elders primarily are "qualified to teach." (1 Timothy 3:2)
    w89 9/15 21 - 3
Since Christian undershepherds have been provided by the Great Shepherd, Jehovah God, how do you think he wants us to view them? Surely, God expects us to follow the Bible-based direction received through loving overseers under the supervision of the Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses. Then 'the Lord will be with the spirit we show,' we will enjoy peace, and we will be upbuilt spiritually.-2 Timothy 4:22; compare Acts 9:31; 15:23-32.

On the earth today, the chief responsibility for caring for our spiritual needs has been entrusted to "the faithful and discreet slave." Its representative Governing Body takes the lead and coordinates the worldwide Kingdom-preaching work. Especially might these spirit-appointed elders be viewed as spiritual governors, for Hebrews 13:7 can be rendered: "Be you mindful of the ones governing . . . you." (Kingdom Interlinear) In view of their God-given assignment, they deserve our full cooperation, even as the first-century governing body had the cooperation of the early Christians.-Acts 15:1, 2.

Overseers have been spirit-appointed to care for the spiritual needs of the congregation.

Jehovah would be displeased if we failed to be obedient and submissive to Christian overseers.

We will be helped to obey and honor those taking the lead if we remember that God himself has provided the elders.

Since these men are spirit appointed and God's organization occupies a vital place in the lives of Jehovah's Witnesses, surely we want to demonstrate our gratitude and respect for theocratic arrangements.
