My theory is that my dad finally succumbed to over 25 years of constant brainwashing...coupled with the fact that now it was just them alone and she was always GONE, either auxiliary pious-sneering or at meetings or whatnot

That fits the description of my father as well, and my dad was an elder till the day he died, a hard drinking, philandering elder I should say.

It is good to remember that unbelieving spouses may feel abandoned or threatened when their mate leaves to participate in Christian activities, but loving reassurances can go a long way in allaying such feelings."

Yeeees.....I remember how "reassured" Gumby felt when his smug, self-righteous son-in-law told him that if he stopped going to the meetings, they wouldn't have anything to do with him. I guess he must've just misunderstood eh?

There's a reason why this damn cult splits so many families up and it's because they have drilled it into the believers' brain that loyalty to the Borg comes before anything---even your spouse and children. And it's only going to get worse. The goons and thugs running the show are very worried and angry at the number who are abandoning ship. Since they lack normal coping and reasoning skills, the best they can do is to invent ficticious names to promote the illusion that all is well in Never-Never-land........

I don't think Jesus was referring to what is written in the Watchtower or an elders' manual...

"He said that I was being brainwashed. Instead of arguing, I said that he could be right but I also told him that I could not honestly see how."

Surely the whole point of being brainwashed is that you're not aware of the fact that you are being brainwashed at the time? Have I missed something?! I very much doubt that someone in the process of being succesfully brainwashed would, when questioned on the issue, say:

"Darn it, you're right - how silly of me! There I go again. Me and my stoopid susceptibility to brainwashing leading me astray...."

As a Witness I knew was so fond of saying, "There are none so blind as those who will not see." That sums up the JW cult personality as well as anything I can think of. I especially appreciated the point therevealer made. The WTS 'speaks with forked tongue' or out of both sides of its mouth. In the same article in which Jesus' example of relying on the Scriptures for his teaching and understanding, the apostate leaders of the WTS tell their readers to "seek Scriptural counsel from publications of the faithful and discreet slave class and from the elders." Yet this glaring example of cognitive dissonance will go right over the heads of dedicated Witnesses. They won't notice any contradiction. Examples like this only serve to widen the distance I am putting between me and this God-dishonoring religion.
