  They made a prophecy of the future, printed it millions of times, and claimed God said it. "millions now living will never die" "the generation alive and aware of world events in 1914 will see the end of the world" "if you are a school age kid in 1975, you will not live long enough to have kids of your own" - and so on.

  A false prophet is one who, according to Deuteronomy, makes a false prediction of the future and claims that the prediction came from God, or in other words claiming that 'God has said he will do a certain thing at a certain time' etc.

  I would think that there's more than one way to attain the status of prophet than just a simple declarative statement.

  In regard to 1975, the JW organization at one point stated that, "In order for the Lord Jesus Christ to be "Lord even of the sabbath day," his reign would have to be the seventh in a series of thousand year periods or millenniums."

  Since Jesus himself is the one that stated that he was "Lord of the sabbath" the honesty of Jesus has now been attached to the prediction as collateral.

  That is, in essence exactly what a prophet does when he or she explicitly says, "This is what God has said..." They've set up a situation where either God is lying or they are.
