"We are not prophesying; we are merely giving our surmises . . . We do not even aver that there is no mistake in our interpretation of prophecy and our calculations of chronology. We have merely laid these before you, leaving it for each to exercise his own faith or doubt in respect to them"-Zion's Watch Tower, January 1, 1908 (reprint) page 4110 "The year 1925 is here. With great expectation Christians havelooked forward to this year. Manyhave confidently expected that all members of the body of Christ will be changed to heavenly glory during this year. This may be accomplished. It may not be. In his own due time God will accomplish his purposes concerning his people. Christians should not be so deeply concerned about what may transpire this year."- The Watch Tower, January 1, 1925, page 3 -- Nothing like Campings predictions..

the Creator's promise of a peaceful and secure new world before the generation that saw the events of 1914 passes away.
Thequietone - I would sincerely like to hear your reply to the above. The Watchtower society printed on their magazine for decades that it was God's promise that a new world would be here prior to the generation that saw the events of 1914 passing away. Please tell us your thoughts on this. What is the difference between saying "God says the end is coming between x date and x date" and saying "it is God's promise that the end will come before those that saw the events of 1914 pass away"? Seriously what is the difference? It is a matter of clever semantics. If God approves of the society and doesn't consider them to be false prophets simply due to a technicality then that is a God I want nothing to do with.

Here is some excellent reasoning on the subject. Religion can get away with murder, so long as there is enough "wiggle room"

Maybe look at older pubs. What you are doing is lying to yourself by ignoring the facts. Russell preached and taught publicly that 1914 was the end rather than the beginning and he taught that for a long time. As 1914 was drawing closer, he start to have doubts and this was shown in the publication closer to 1914, as he revised some publications to read 1915 from 1914 and started to make a way out for himself if nothing happened in 1914.
This is similar to what wts did with 1975 when they blamed the r&f and said they never said the end would come in 1975 which is somewhat true. What they did though was they strongly implied 1975 and made r&f read between the lines enough that they were praising those suckers who sold homes and went preaching their shit only to be disappointed because nothing happened in the marked year only to be blamed for mis-reading what wts was saying.
If you cannot publicly reject a teaching within a congregation then you can assume that the teaching is on the level coming from God which means it equals a message from a prophet and if it fails it's false = false prophecy!

The Quiet One, what will happen as time moves on and 1914 as the "beginning of the end" is proven false? I remember in my childhood this date being touted as absolute and signified that the end was right around the corner (as it has always been).
Also, does the mass exodus of 1925 and 1975 of JW's mean nothing?
