The Ayn Rand Objectivist would look at a person caught in a strong Rip Tide as nature culling the herd.

You are just showing that you are ignorant of Objectivist philosophy. This is not Objectivism.

From Atlas Shrugged- 'I swear-by my life and my love of it,that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine'.

Well the care and love I have for our children and their children and their children's children is much different than Ayn's idea. The things I do as an environmentalist are to look out centuries from now and make sure the earth is healthy and productive for all just like my ancestors who left Ireland and the British Isles centuries ago wanted a better life for 'another man' my great great great great grandfather as a 2 year old and his children to come.

Live for the 'sake of another man' (all humans).

If you love your children, and they are meaningful to your life and happiness, then this is no contradiction to Rand's idea. Loving your children is one of your values and is part of your own happiness. You are still living your life in accordance to your personal values for happiness. If you abused and neglected your children instead, you would be miserable rather than happy, because it would run against your values and sense of purpose in life.

There are better philosophers than Ayn if we need to pick up a life lesson here and there. 'I will never live for the sake of another man'. No no, choose among a wide variety of philosophers who encouraged alturism.

That is a sound bite. Her philosophy extends much further than that. I am not saying I agree with all of it, but it isn't reducible to that quote.

You could always live by the Bro Code like NoRoomForGeorge.

I agree, any person can write about the flaws they see in the Society in which they find themselves and offer a complete solution as Ayn did. When I was 7 or 8 the Mobile Library bus would come through our neighborhood each week in the summer for us to check out books. One of my earliest favorites was on Albert Sweitzer and what he tried to do in Gabon, he has his flaws as I would understand later as an adult, Lord Cook was a better hospital administrator and taught medicine as a vocation to the Gabonese, but Dr. Sweitzer was a good introduction to alturism.

Congressman Paul Ryan and company have made their case for governance with Rand's ideas and a new generation has the opportunity to decide if that is how they want their future.

Would you like the 7.99 paperback version or the 19.99 hardback edition

The last chapter is how to shred and recycle Atlas Shrugged into compost for the Vege Garden....

Here is the late great Hitch on Rand.

I think he does a far better job, and with fewer words, than this hack known as "Zen."

A mentally ill woman whose trauma manifest itself in philosophically over-wrought novels, which, inexplicably, have found devotees increasingly amongst those of the far right over the past 40 years.

I find that frightening. Don't you?
