Your daughter's dress is too short

Hello everyone. This is my very first post on this site and I am happy to be here. I would like to rely a little experience to everyone. Recently, I went back to the Kingdom Hall after an absence of almost thirteen years. I spent a lot of those years happily raising my children but once in a while experiencing twinges of guilt about missing meetings, etc. Anyway, a few minutes after I arrived home from that meeting the telephone rang. It was Mister Elder calling and I thought he was calling to tell me that he was glad to see me at the meeting after such a long while. Well, no, actually he was calling to tell me that my daughter's dress was to short and if she were to continue coming to meetings then her dress would have to be much longer. I was shocked. My daughter is not baptized; she is 19 years old and a beautiful girl (okay I'm prejudiced). I had gone to Macy's and bought her a beautiful black dress just for the occasion. I didn't think it was too short and neither did she. She refuses to go back to the Kingdom Hall anymore. And wouldn't it have been better if after having gone to the meetings for a while and she had her consciousness raised and then took it upon herself to drop her himlines instead of someone dictating to her that she should drop them. What do you think?

Wow the insensitivity of that elder is mind boggling! I don't blame your daughter for not wanting to go back. I wouldn't want to either. Of all the unchrist like things he could have said that one about tops the list!!!

Well, glad that you have found the forum here where peoples actual opinions are valued and if not always honored at least excepted LOL!

Your experience doesn't surprise me. Many JW's have a Pharasaic approach to things. Please don't feel guilty because of that ignorant man. Tell your daughter the same thing.

Actually, Dutchy, most of us here are pretty normal people. What you have experienced is not an aberration. It is the normal JW response. Rules are much more important than people.

As for the twinges of guilt, keep on reading here and on other sites. In time, you will be fully deprogrammed. Once that process is complete, the only guilt you will feel will be for the time wasted in the organization.

Dutchy, consider yourself lucky to have been re-exposed to the reality of the JW world so quickly. Yes they WILL regulate every thing you do. Now of course, they won't 'tell' you to do/not do something, but they will say things like "A mature christain would not do/do this ...". The age old guilt trip starts. No, there is no love there, just quickly jugdemental control of every aspect of your life.

PS, my wife used to get 'counseled' regarding her dress all the time ... came from bitter old men whose wives had let themselves go and they couldn't stand to see a good-looking woman who was proud of her body. Not to mention the huge jealousy of those women who couldn't be waken from their obesity to try and look good themselves ... no, they'd rather make everyone else look/dress like them instead.

Double PS, these were the same 'men of god' who drilled my sister-in-law for days (hours at a time) about all the 'details' of her 'loose conduct' (not even real sex) - probably sitting their w/ stiffies imagining this 16 year old girl ....... and one of whom which was banging a fellow 'brothers' wife AT THE TIME!!!
