Why Facebook is The Watchtowers Biggest Enemy

Hmm, VCRs in the eighties. Yep, I rented R rated movies like Risky Business and Breakfast Club.

Facebook has been great to me. I have reconnected with my cousins who are all DF, once in a while contact a cousin who is still in, for how long I don't know, but I will be there if needed. I have one high school friend who is still in and a couple of other friends/family who are out.

I guess you can say I am a cyberstalker sometimes on there, I check on others. But hey, if they didn't want people to know stuff they would keep their account private and I couldn't see anything.

I feel so much more connected since I found some family who will have something to do with me and I have Facebook to thank for it. That is why I feel Facebook is the WT biggest enemy. DF people are no longer out in the cold all alone. We can reconnect with each other and support each other.

Facebook is a minor threat as an enemy to the WTS. The Watchtower's biggest enemy is it's own history & lies, and vocal X-JW's who speak out against the true nature of the cult.

Sure is a big enemy. The WTS style is to isolate JWs to their "moat"-like congregation, some 80-90 people of sorts, nothing more. It creates a small "village" of people unaware of the real "today" world. Unnatural for youth and many adults to be content with that.

My kids have found their half-sibling in a foreign country through FB. They have made contact with their JW cousin (former Bethelite) through FB. I have grown children that live out of state and grandchildren, that FB is convenient to keep up with them, with not much effort. Just little daily bits of information on their activities. I love it.

I think another big enemy is that 'education' is so accessible now. Back when (very long ago) I turned down scholarships, one had to go far away to the location, and most likely live on campus. That called for a dramatic change. However, now with community colleges one doesn't have to move far, can even take many classes linked to the college. Then, ones can later to on to further education not far away either. I have a couple nieces going on for their Master's with many classes online. This is so convenient by comparison.

The information "plate" convenient at home/computer is so much more desirable than the non-energizing re-'hashed' info down at the local KH.

I think the internet in general is a huge problem for the WTBTS. Facebook is just a minor part of that - I don't use Facebook so maybe I"m unaware of its power though. Years ago, a person would have to really search out "apostate" material - it didn't just drop into your lap at the touch of a button. Older WT publications were not easily searchable, you would have to know about Ray Franz to even know to look for his book. Now, even the most devoted JW has full access to all this information, and it's really easy to stumble across it in the privacy of your own home.

    On a slightly sidebar note...

History has demonstrated a particular phenomenon about human society. A certain sort of person resists change.

Many reasons are given for this, but, one in particular is revealing.

Certain people like to keep their world view small .

To maintain their belief about their version of the world it becomes automatic to exclude advances, technology changes, trends and new norms.

    Why?

It keeps information at bay which can appear and REFUTE the evidence that their view of the world is certain, true and absolute.

Also, the older a person is the more resistant to change they can become unless they continually update their skillset.

What could be worse than learning HOW to do something only to have a new way make it obsolete?

As far as RELIGION is concerned, since the very nature of Absolute Truth makes it UNchangeable....think how great the risk is in having that

core foundation falsified by new evidence or historical facts, documents, discoveries??

Jehovah's Witnesses are taught to fear and despise EVERYTHING not specifically introduced into their thinking by Watchtower Publications.

    It is a closed shop.

    No tresspass.

Good observation Terry. I remember that they even said negative things about pocket calculators when they became affordable in the 1970's

I wonder if I went back in early Bible Student literature, if I would find similar condemnation of the telephone? It honestly would not surprise me.

That's why I still have the reasoning book, I'm using their own words on 'em

served hot from the WTS itself

LOST GENERATION: I agree, especially coupled with the rest of the internet. I also am of the opinion this is why the religion wants uneducated, impoverished people there: a POOR person is LESS likely to have an INTERNET connection! No internet connection, NO way to connect with or search for anybody. No way to research the religion. The result: isolated and ignorant people who are more fearful and more controlled. The religion is happy then. I happen to love Facebook and have reconnected with old schoolmates and other people from the religion who moved away or are OUT for various reasons. I was able to hear the REAL story!!!
