Mrs Cofty and I went for a walk yesterday to see some ancient rock art. We went to two sites both within 20 minutes drive of our house. The first one is about 60 minutes walk up a hill the other about 2 minutes walk from where you can park the car. Neither site has any signposts or information, I only knew they existed because of a book I bought last week.

They are referred to as "cup and ring markings" and although the period spans a long time they are thought to be approx 5000 years old. The first one looks out over some of the most beautiful scenery imaginable. Its easy to see why people have revered the site for millenia. Its not clear what the significance of the art was. It probably had sacred meanings but I'm sure it also just looked good with rainwater trickling round the spirals and through the channels.

There are a few other sites want to visit soon. This part of the country is absolutely littered with history.

As an American, I am so envious of your history. Stunning. School must be tough with so much national history to learn.

Yes we are very lucky. Here is another site I visited a while ago, like a mini-Stonehenge. Again its only about 15 minutes drive from here.

Beautiful. BOTR---as Americans we have quite the fascinating history too. I have centered most of my research for 4 anthropology classes on Native Americans. The wonders never cease, and are just as exciting. We are a huge hemisphere with countless cultures and times that differ very much from each other. My friend recently uncovered a spearhead that was dated many thousands of years old.

Thank You for sharing your pictures too ! It is intriguing wondering what they must have meant to the originators . This past summer we went to Utah and visited several sites that had pictographs ...if I can figure out how to share them I will ....

    Cool, Cofty!!!

You might want to check out the book, "The Language of the Goddess" by Marija Gimbutas, chapter 6, "Eyes of the Goddess", page 60...

There are several photos on that page of spirals, from the island of Malta and from Ireland. The one from Ireland is located at the Newgrange tomb-sanctuary, curbstone #67, northeast side of the mound, in Boyne Valley, county Meath, circa 3,200 B.C. - which would place it around 5,300 ybp - years before present...

Oh, and on the opposite page, figure #98 in the book, has "cupmarks", which are said to "symbolize the source of life-giving moisture.... British Neolithic, (Baildon Moor, Yorkshire, England)..."
