    Not easy, not easy...

I'm inclined to support the state. There have been too many false accusations and waste of precious resources in regard to these crimes - and before you get upset by that (!) CONSIDER that the state has limited resources and time and any waste may mean that OTHERS are neglected - BOTH INNOCENT and GUILTY.

I'm also influenced by the molestation of my stepdaughter - which made me enraged because she was ashamed (OK, understandable) and half an entire congregation covered it up and lied about it (NOT understandable). Expose it, expose it!

If crimes take place, expose them! Making accusations - without cost or risk or inconvenience - is a huge mistake for any society to make. So is the surpression of crime. The middle way is the only way....

Today prosecuters are notoriously biased...toward their own conviction stats. No doubt this DA is bucking for higher office and wants a high conviction rate to parade around upon. SCUMBAG!

wow, talk about a catch situation?

Like a poster said, this person needs an identity change for protection................

If the rapist is this dangerous and nobody can ever sustain charges?

Very few states have witness protection programs. They are very expensive to run.

That is such a simple solution isn't it? The problem with simple solutions is that they don't take into account the mental stability of the victim involved. Many sexual assault victims are not emotionally ready to deal with this issue straight away...many need time to come to terms with their emotions. Many, like this girl do not have the emotional support and strength to just plow ahead regardless of their world falling apart. Some people have the strength and support to deal with this type of thing...some don't.

People really need to take into account the age of this girl, her background and HER welfare above anything else. SHE is the victim. Victims are the reason for the court case in the first place. Not just convicting a bad person. Who lets face it...we say we will put away to keep society safe...but will be released at some point to do it again if he chooses. WE want him to be punished, maybe she doesn't, maybe she is more concerned with her safety...maybe she has a lot of reasons why she doesn't want to testify...maybe we should respect that.

If he is a serial rapist there are other people who want to testify. That expression is a joke anyway..'serial rapist'...ALL rapists a serial rapists...I really don't understand why some are considered worse than others. For every rapist that is caught goodness knows how many rapes they haven't been caught for. One of the men that raped me bragged about how many other rapes he had done. I met a person through friends who was bragging about the rapes he had committed. The mentality of a rapist makes them serial rapists...once is never enough...it does not satisfy their desire.

This girls life may also be in danger...it is easy to sit back in our armchairs and say what we think she should do...much harder when you are the person involved and it is your life on the line.

it might be harsh for the girl................. but how many future rapes are there that could be stopped?

And how many will never even be reported now? It MIGHT be harsh-- let's just sacrifice the well being of one unwanted teenager to get the conviction, and turn our heads when future victims refuse to speak out.

If you have ANY concept of how many rapes are not reported you would not see this case as special enough to destroy a young girls life. There is no good excuse for doing this to a young girl.

According to statistics - Justice Department, National Crime Victimization Survey: 2006-2010

    Out of every 100 rapes

    46 get reported to police

    12 lead to an arrest

    9 get prosecuted

5 lead to a felony conviction

3 rapists will spend even a single day in prison

THE OTHER 97 WILL WALK FREE

Every 2 mins someone in the US is sexually assaulted

She's 17 years old..... and withdrawing is better? healthier? Saves her frame of mind?

So, the male might keep on raping ... and she might continue enfeebled? I'm not sure how greatly such a potential outcome should be 'respected'.

And I'm not sure if the legal system should simply allow it either, in regard to their duty to prevent crime.

I have some experience with maximum security prisoners. I have no interest in their punishment. I have a great interest in removing them from society as a practical matter to prevent further crime.

Exactly Still Thinking, and the only reason it's slightly better today than it used to be were rules put in place to stop punishing victims for coming forward. those rules only took the edge off, but this is a huge step backwards. We are back to punishing the victims of rape 'for our own good', and we have chosen a particularly vulnerable victim who cannot possibly have the support of a child that wasn't removed from her own home and all the baggage that comes with it.

What the rapist didn't destroy---the state will destroy. What a victory! That will lower the rape cases backing up the courts! Silence the future victims. And make this very young woman carry the weight of something that is clearly bigger than her.

What did they do to properly support this young woman? Who was involved with keeping her safe and secure? Or did they just expect her to follow their rules at the expense of her well being? The more I think about that girl sitting in jail, for being raped, the angrier I get. I can't help but think if she had an intact family this wouldn't have happened. There is no way they would have done such a thing to my daughter.
