If they somehow have hoodwinked your mother legally, "God's [loving] Organization" certainly deserves to be exposed for this. Even if the loan was legally forgiven, shouldn't scripture on love supersede this legal argument? What about taking care of widows? What would Jesus do? "God's Organization" would always be expected to do the right thing by Christ's standard, not necessarily the legal thing of Satan's world.

Regarding the loan. If your mom used a lawyer to represent her, it might make a difference. The WT should insist on legal representation for donees and loans. Is it possible that she was not lucid and not fully aware of the consequences?

Frankly, the first thing I would do is learn what the statute of limitations is. If it going to toll this week, you want to warp yourself to a lawyer. If you have longer, agencies and the A=G is a good start.

Also sounds like this is a very common state of affairs ........ who'da thunk!!

Anyway, there are many 'class action' law suits going on these days.

If you have documentation and dozens/hundreds of other hoodwinked jw's have the same .................

why not try to get 'everyone' together .........and do it up BIG !?

The law slaps down errant corporations by fines. Get fined enough, the corporation sits up and takes notice.

It would be so much better for the government to treat the WTBTS as a corporation than an errant religious organization.

For you to take up this case will you have to get your mother to give you power of Attorney?

If she is still an active JW will she be prepeared to rock the boat?

If she did forgive the loan there should be something in writting and the WTS will have a copy of it and should produce it if asked.

I may be thick but I don't see a loan condition. Destroying a document during a legal transaction is crazy. Granted we told antitrust clients to purge their records regularly. Businesses do purge every so many years. The partners had a fit when they saw the work of another firm. The tackiness quotient is sky high. Destroying old files should be discussed as a general business practice, not an antritrust remedy.

To me, the portions posted sound like a gift, not a loan. If it was not a loan but a gift,.......bad news.

It is a conditional gift. Were they paying her interest? What was the term of the loan? Why would WTBTS borrow funds from a member rather than a bank that holds their assets to get a better deal? The WT should want to protect their reputation and stay out of court and prelitigation by demanding that the party hire a lawyer to explain the deal. An arm's length transaction. If you fear Armageddon, I don't see arms' length bargaining. I would advise telling the donor to keep all records, not destroy them. They should do these things b/c it is the best practice for them, not b/c of their religious standing. Such precautions would shield the WT.

Should I use my states Attorney General or New York's Attorney General to lodge a complaint of abuse?

Sounds like a good idea--plus Adult Protective Services maybe.
