Good question!
This is something that one of my therapists talked to me about a lot. I always was taught that selfishness was a completely negative term. She introduced me to a different way of viewing the word 'selfish'. So I've thought about it a lot.
Simply put, here is her argument:
Nature is selfish - it has to be, in order to survive. So, if we aren't selfish, we don't practice self-care, and are no good to anyone.
Humans can also be 'self-absorbed', which is different than selfish. This term implies that we think of our own wants to the exclusion of others, and never focus on either the common good, or another individual's needs.
What do you think?

good advice apostatethunder, I have done more than enough soul searching for one lifetime...now...I am looking out. And it is quite exhilarating. I am learning some massive lessons. More so than any religion or faith has ever taught me.
Hmm, I am not sure about the " we are all stardust", but I will look it up. Now that I'm thinking of it though, you are reminding me of the old song "we are stardust, we are golden, and we've got to get ourselves, back to the garden". Is that CSN&Y?
I first pondered this when watching a video "Holographic Universe", an interview with the physicist Michael Talbot. It's on youtube. Very cool stuff!
:)
tried to copy...but didn't want to properly...so here is a link for we are stardust. Well one version. Not the song...lol. Thanks palmtree...maybe that is what inspired it.

That is so cool! I love it. It goes with a philosophy I have (which is not science, just something I have come to feel, and don't know if it's true).
There is an unexplainable something in me, that 'knows' things. I knew these things since I can remember. Some have called me an old soul, some a witch, some just weird. :))
Is this Jung's collective unconscious? Is it energy that never dies (ie, Relativity theory)? Is it the 'soul'? I don't know, I just know it 'is'.
I was born with knowledge. Where does it come from - I cannot know. Perhaps it is the 'stardust'. What a beautiful thought.

I have to agree....
In a way...to be truly selfish you have to NOT be self-absorbed. If we don't think of others we don't benefit. Hows that for a definition?
Ha...I'm listening to the song too....thanks Palm...I'm quite enjoying it....
Well tal....I don't really know...but it could explain a lot...couldn't it.
