2012 August Public WT and the Obliteration of Logic

New August public WT is online.

The first article addresses miracles and tries to refute common objections if miracles are possible. I won't bore you with the details, please see for yourself the blatant disregard of science, documented events, etc...However, in conclusion the article states:

pg.6: "...So, then, are there such things as miracles?

The Bible says that there are. According to

what it tells us, these are not just natural phenomena.

Really, then, is it logical to say that

it is impossible for them to happen just because

they do not occur every day?"

So, there really are miracles (as described in the bible), because the bible clearly says so!?

WTF?! Circular logic at its best!

Let me try my own version: Yan Bibiyan is a Medical Doctor, because it says so in the book "Yan Bibiyan, the Medical Doctor", written by, ahem, Yan Bibiyan.

Trust me enough by now to perform a heart transplant on you?

And then, after gangraping logic in the first part of the paragraph, they appeal to logic in the second part to support their agenda.

This is probably more of a fundamnetalist issue than a strictly JW issue, but I think it still bears pointing out.

Actually i do not see a circular argument. The context of the statement you quote is a response to the question:

OBJECTION 3:Miracles are just natural phenomena that are misunderstood by uneducated people.

The claim that the bible if it is actually true rule out purely natural explanations for the miracles it claim happened is in my oppinion perfectly true. For instance it is hard to see how the miracle of the flood was purely a "misunderstanding" made by uneducated people.

That is not to say the article is not full of fallacies (this is the most stupid watchtower i have read in a long time), the part you quote:

Really, then, is it logical to say that

it is impossible for them to happen just because

they do not occur every day?"

is clearly a strawman; ofcourse nobody says miracles are *impossible* because they "do not occur every day", extremely improbable events occur all the time, and the issue is not if miracles are impossible but if there is any reason to believe they occured.

So what is the difference between miracles and magic? Jehovah sure hates magic, even to the point of denying little kids plastic toys, but he approved of miracles?

Bohm, I see your point in wide context.

However, I was strictly referring to this part: "So, then, are there such things as miracles [lots of them described in the bible]? The Bible says that there are."

The assertion that there are miracles [in the bible], regardless if they are just miracles or disprove/complement natural phenomena, is based strictly on the fact that the bible says so. It doesn't get more circular than that to me.

I agree with the strawman in the last part.

Gawd the reasoning is horrible in this article.

They use airplane travel, video conferencing, heart transplants and and iPods as examples of things that humans have accomplished in the last few decades, so of course God can perform mighty acts!

    Can't. Read. Anymore.

I love it when the society tries to use logic.

Hey, that's great! It's just like 'The Harp of God' reasoning. They're going old-school.

I think the cute sister on page 3 obliterates the need for logic. But then, my hormones are a bit wacky these days...

    Anyway, hormones aside, page 8:

If a surgeon was scheduled to perform a

    complicated procedure on you, how

would you feel if you found out that

he had never performed this type of

surgery? No doubt you would be concerned.

But what if, on the other hand,

you found out that this doctor was the

leading surgeon in his field and that he

    had performed hundreds of successful

operations like the one you were about

to have? Would you not have much

more confidence that he could help

    you?

The sick world in which we find ourselves

    today needs drastic “surgery.”

Through his Word, the Bible, Jehovah

God has promised that he will restore

Paradise to this earth. (2 Peter 3:13)

But for that to happen, wickedness will

first have to be removed, completely cut

    away.

So...we should be comforted by the fact that Jehovah is an expert--no, the LEAD expert--in mass killings, having EXTENSIVE experience in wiping out huge swaths of mankind. So I'm definitely excited that the divine latex gloves are being prepped as we speak.

Is he also good at frontal lobotomies? Or is that after the whole extermination of 6.9 billion people?

How about this one on page 12? An experience from a man raised Catholic:

After extensively investigating the subject, I was

convinced that our salvation comes from Jehovah

through Jesus. We had been led to believe

that our salvation came from the priests.

Wow! Imagine that, huh? Salvation coming from a bunch of priests instead of through Jesus! So obviously he takes up studying with the Witnesses...and I suppose he learns that salvation comes from a different set of future priests instead of through Jesus...but joins up anyway.

Natural Phenomenom : The miracle of givin' birth to a child, which can be explained

Magic : Not explained by natural phenomenom, equals a miracle

When little caleb mom asked if the doll was magic , he should have said

No mom, he works miracles like in the bible
