What is with abusive atheists?

My two cents on this as a die hard cyclist is this: There are idiots that both operate a bike and a vehicle. It isn't that the apparatus they are operating makes them an idiot. Bad behaviour on the road is a result of their personality, disposition etc, etc.
Similarly, you have people who have a point of view that bring to the board a diversity of personalty, attitudes, and agendas.
Fernando: As far as atheists are concerned I would like to learn more about the range of views that fit or do not fit the orthodox definition of what an atheist is (if there is such a definition).
I’m not sure you would ever get a clear-cut definition of what is an atheist. An atheist can be a carbon-copy of you with the exception of believing in a deity. I once heard a nice explanation of what atheism is and it resonates perfectly with me: Atheism is merely a response to theism. It’s not necessarily an ‘ism’. It’s not a worldview. It doesn’t drive me in my decision making.
It would be nice if people were more careful in how they address one another. I mean that linguistically of course. There are no abusive atheists. There IS a small percentage of the worlds population that are abusive and a small percent of that group happen to not believe in a deity/god.

btw my post was not directed at you NC although it came directly after yours. I literally was sitting in front of my reply box for half an hour and it was only after I'd posted that I saw that you had posted before me. just thought I'd mention this.

lthough I am a non-religious believer and simple follower of Jesus, I have had some constructive interaction with atheists and agnostics on JWN. I do enjoy learning more about their perspective. This generally creates better mutual understanding which is conducive to less prejudice, ignorance and hostility in society.
Not so others who use abusive language and display a mean spirit. O.P.
I believe his statement above draws into play at least two or even more distinct groups or maybe no "group think' at all.
I see calm balance in his statements
I think the "Let me just try to understand this attitude" trumps 'I'll get you attitude "
Plus it simply makes you feel better inside (ones fight or flight hormones don't have to cut in )

One can hope the atheist vs believers vs atheist vs believer threads will not continue to eclipse JWN, yes.

that made me laugh xchange and i agree that there is a small percentage of the population that have a problem but would go further and say that it is also a small percentage of an individual's makeup too and that the internet seems to bring it on.

I think the timing for this thread was bad from the getgo. Sparlock and Ms Conti's victory has been a welcome change to the atmosphere of the board and a much better focus.
But what the hell do I know?

thank you flyinghighnow for reminding us of Fernando's intentions. I have been sitting here for half and hour wondering how to reply to questions that have been directed to me and that I would like to expand on but the problem is that one has to first point out where there
is a misunderstanding or a misreading and after that to aks is the intention just to paint believers as stupid victims or not? I don't have the patience of tec or aguest so have decided not to reply for now and let Fernando come in first to direct how he wants the thread to
proceed.
I thought you were doing well, so I was doing this:
;)
So here is what i wanted to say on teh subject of victim:
A servant is not a victim. A slave (by choice) is also not a victim. Someone who needs to be saved is ALSO not a victim.
A victim has had their rights trampled, or been harmed by the actions of another, or whatever. Saving a person from themselves is different. (unless you are a victim of yourself, but that can be said of anyone at all) A victim does not choose their fate, or direction. It is thrust upon them without their choice. Someone might be a victim in someone else's eyes (like Q's); but that is because that person would consider themselves to be a victim if they were a servant, or slave, or asking someone for help from themselves or the world or whatever.
(I would point out that being a victim of something does not make one weak or stupid... probably Q did not mean that, or NC either).
Peace,
tammy
