Yes, I know you were not agreeing with the Tower’s policies on shunning. I’m sorry if it came out that way. Your post only caused me to think out loud, and ramble on about methods of punishment, and outcomes.

The Tower uses the one punishment for all perceived sins--shunning. The result is nothing more than mental abuse. As most of us know, it’s mostly done to control, not "to keep the congregation clean." In the United States, we can’t build prisons fast enough, and every politician puts more police on the streets (at a time when crime is down). The results are career criminals who hone illegal skills from other inmates. Obviously society and the churches within need protection from harm. However, simplistic answers, (i.e., shunning and the US prison system) has a history of near total failure, but we continue doing the same thing.

I too believe there should be consequences for our behavior. In the process, it’s a pity we don’t look beyond the "eye for an eye" punishment, and seek ways to empower people and fracture the spoken and unspoken class system that creates dysfunctional behavior. Again, I’m rambling because of the topic (i.e., punishment) not because I’m in agreement or disagreement with your comments. (My students also love it when I ramble--NOT!)

    JAVA,

    Ramble on, dude!

Most times I wonder how retarded my posts must come across. Thinking out loud is a good way to put it.
