Finkelstein, I think I can see how the Mormons have grown more than the Witnesses. Their percentage growth is on a total membership base of six million, compared to just over one million.

Looks like the Assemblies of God shellacked 'em all.

Bear in mind that while the Mormon church claims over six million members in the United States, surveys find that only around half that number self-identify as Mormons. In contrast to that many more identify themselves as JWs than are counted a publishers in the Watchtower's official statistics.

The Jews were a fast growing religion in their day. Until the Roman Army came. Historians wrote that 'they were slaughtered like cattle'.

One could plausibly say that back in the 1950's and 60's percentage wise from a year to year viewpoint,

but not now and I don't think its correct pooh poohing the Mormons growth just because they don't count their numbers like the JWS.

If you wanted to analytical question the adherent numbers of one particular religious organization, the JWs would a prime suspect.

As I've mentioned before the JWS as religious organization is an utter failer given its long standing public proselyting.

When adding all percentage figures in the last 4 years, the fastest growing Christian church is the Jehovah's Witnesses with a 10.37% growth rate increase, and the Assemblies of God falls in 2nd place with a 6.74% increase. Most of the other major churches, especially mainline Protestant churches, have consistiently reported decreases in the last 4 years.

The last 4 years have been a slight anomaly for JWs, since the GFC and a few earthquakes scared a some back with fears of Armageddon. 2012 looks like they are going back to their normal growth rate. Compare a 10 year period and you will get a more accurate picture.

You know what the fastest growing religion in America is? Statism. The growing reliance on government.

but not now and I don't think its correct pooh poohing the Mormons growth just because they don't count their numbers like the JWS.

It is not simply that Mormons count their members differently. It is that they count millions of people as members who do not even consider themselves as Mormons.

If you wanted to analytical question the adherent numbers of one particular religious organization, the JWs would a prime suspect.

Whatever else can be said about the way JWs count their memebers, the fact remains that census results consistently show that more people consider themselves to be JWs than are counted as members by the Watchtower's own statistics.

The last 4 years have been a slight anomaly for JWs, since the GFC and a few earthquakes scared some back with fear of Armageddon.

The same world conditions affect other religions. I think it's likely those other religions will have benefitted to some extent from people's hardship and worldwide instability. You could argue earthquakes might have a particular effect on JWs because they view them as part of the sign of the end. I think the most significant earthquakes in recent years have been in Haiti, Japan and New Zealand. Have significant numbers of JWs come in from those countries? Not particularly as far as I can see. I heard of some people who went back to the organization in the wake of the 2001 terrorist attacks. I have never heard of someone going back because of reports of earthquakes.
