Latest WT: Reduction in branch offices is "visible proof" that Christ is "breaking down human barriers"

    Hi everyone

As has already been mentioned, the December 15th Watchtower (Study Edition) is now online and available for download on this link.

I couldn't help but smile at the concluding comments of the final study article on page 28 where it had this to say:

"The very concept of “foreigner” has already lost much of its meaning among Jehovah’s Witnesses, who pay little attention to the nationality of those in their midst. Recently, for example, several of their smaller branch offices were merged to simplify the work of oversight and to improve efficiency in accomplishing the preaching of the good news of the Kingdom. (Matt. 24:14) As far as legal requirements permitted, national barriers were ignored when such consolidations were made. That is yet another visible proof that Jesus Christ as Jehovah’s rightfully enthroned Ruler is breaking down human barriers, and he is the one who will soon “complete his conquest”!—Rev. 6:2."

This is a masterstroke by the Watch Tower Society. We all know the REAL reason why branches are being closed is because there is an obvious imbalance in donations between wealthy and poorer countries that is posing serious financial issues for the Society. Because of this they are forced to (1) liquidate any lucrative property assets, (2) halve their monthly magazine printing commitments in only 7 years, (3) install credit card machines in assembly halls, and (4) reduce their worldwide operating costs by closing down expendable branches.

The threat of increased lawsuits, damages and settlements in the wake of the Candace Conti verdict certainly doesn't help matters.

As I've been saying for months now, last year saw an unprecedented 16% reduction in branch numbers, from 116 in 2010 to 98 in 2011. This is unheard of for an organization that, until very recently, prided itself on its relentless surge of global expansion of which "branch dedications" played a key role. Those days are no more. However, we are asked to believe that the reason is nothing to do with reduced donations (even though the paragraph uses words such as "efficiency", "simplify" and "consolidation"). Rather, it is all to do with Jesus. After all, he has already started his work of "breaking down human barriers" by personally instigating this 16% drop in branches.

This means that the Society can (and WILL) continue to lower the number of branches without fear of upsetting or shocking the brothers - because they will simply point to this Watchtower and its explanation that all of this downsizing is "visible proof" that Jesus is in control.

The curious thing, of course, is that although "Jesus Christ as Jehovah's rightfully enthroned Ruler is breaking down human barriers" he is forced to do so only "as far as legal requirements permit" . So even Jehovah's rightfully enthroned ruler is limited in how he can provide this overwhelming "visible proof" of his work of "breaking down human barriers" . Interesting.

So, in summary, you can expect to see further reductions in branch numbers in next year's Yearbook, but DON'T expect the Society to be eating any humble pie as a result. After all, all of this is "visible proof" of Christ's involvement in the organization.

For those who haven't read them, here are the links to my articles on the future of the Society and the recent spate of branch closures.

I have also made a Google map of the branches of the Watchtower Society which you can view by clicking here.

I wonder if there is a statement in a past Watchtower that says something along the lines of 'The increase in branches / printing is a sure sign that the end of this system of things is coming' because that would nicely contradict the imminent "Closing down branches and reducing printing is a sure sign that the end of this system is coming' type comments....

    Cedars:

Thanks for pointing out this WT spin.

Wouldn't "breaking down barriers" be conceptually opposed to "as far as legal requirements permit"?

I mean, being careful about "legal requirements" is all about NOT breaking things.

Another cuiosity: "Completing his conquest" (Rev 6:2) is supposed to describe Jesus during the entire last days. So for the first 96 years of that time period he builds and multiplies branch offices. But now that we have arrived at the last few months or years we finally get to see his real strategy: Disassemble those branch offices.

None of this is meant to inpugn Jesus. But WT spin is really getting obvious.

This reminds me of a DO during a circuit assembly. During his talk he berated those who spoke of Bethel having "layoffs." Noooo! Those were reassignments!

Denial modus in full swing again.

Interesting that negative publicity on the net very often results in bogus cover-up statements a few weeks later. In fact the internet is dictating what they write.

Most important is that they admitted themselves they reduced significantly the amount of branch offices. Just wait a few years to see if and where decline in numbers took place, and then this statement is great to be brought up again. Not very good performance if you state to take measures to improve efficiency of the preaching work, which should normally lead to an increase in publishers, and consequently the number of adepts goes down. I am quite sure Cedars is willing to provide us with some stats over a few years.

lol, that's a great way of putting it! Jesus is hardly BREAKING down barriers if he is being careful not to break any barriers that shouldn't be broken for legal reasons. It's hardly "shock and awe", more like "easy does it"!!

Yes, it may well be that this paragraph is a direct response to articles on this site and elsewhere that point to the branch closures and downsizing as a sign of retreat.

Probably not in those exact words, but there are many examples in the Society's publications of "worldwide expansion" being touted as evidence of God's blessing, or God "speeding up the work" in advance of Armageddon. The fascinating thing is that even now the Society is in worldwide RETREAT they can still find a way of spinning it in such a way as to imply that God is backing developments in their favor. Basically, WHATEVER happens over the next few years, you can be sure it will be hailed as "visible proof" of God's blessing.

Expansion and contraction are evidence that Jehovah is breathing.

These guys are just grasping at straws. The funny thing to me is that if they just explained that they opened too many offices in individual countries and that they're reorganizing to gain efficiency, I think most JWs (and even folks like me) would just shrug their shoulders. But, it's insane to say that Jesus ordered the reduction to break down human barriers.

OMG how did I ever fall for this crap?

The WT makes it sound like "branches" 'contributed' to "human barriers" so in closing these branches. Jesus is "breaking down human barriers."

Sounds like more branches will be closed so as Jesus then can "complete his conquest." (So warped)

If branch offices show no respect for national boundaries, how come there are no examples of two or more branches within a single country?
