He probably should have said dialect. He is making reference to Aguest referring to it as 'negro'. StillThinking didn't understand something said to her, because she is from NZ, and what was said is considered highly offensive in her country. They told her she needed diversity training, acted like it was stunning that she didn't understand a subsection of American slang, and then flooded the thread with it. It all goes back to that.
Well jonsey im a bit confused about it also which i why i refer to it as a language in quotation marks. Another poster refered to speaking the "negro" language and ive been trying to figure it out ever since....
di·a·lect (d-lkt) n.
1. a. A regional or social variety of a language distinguished by pronunciation, grammar, or vocabulary, especially a variety of speech differing from the standard literary language or speech pattern of the culture in which it exists: Cockney is a dialect of English. b. A variety of language that with other varieties constitutes a single language of which no single variety is standard: the dialects of Ancient Greek. 2. The language peculiar to the members of a group, especially in an occupation; jargon: the dialect of science. 3. The manner or style of expressing oneself in language or the arts.
4. A language considered as part of a larger family of languages or a linguistic branch. Not in scientific use: Spanish and French are romance dialects.
I had a neighbor who spoke heavy heavy Ebonics. Her accent was so thick I had to really concentrate to understand what she was saying.
Talking about being offended, my husband has a few vietnamese friends. One saw me and asked my husband if I was for sell. When my husband told me that I asked why would he say that? Hubby said the guy mistakenly believed that all black women were prostitutes. Strangely I wasn't offended because I'm not nor have I ever been a prostitute nor do I carry myself like one.
Back in the '90s the Oakland school district once tried to promote the idea that Ebonics is a "language". I've been laughing about that one ever since.
Well...actually. I didn't find it 'highly offensive'. Just patronsising..that was my understanding at the time. I didn't realise it was being said in a friendly way and apologised for the misunderstanding. But 'SOMEONE had to make a BIG issue out of it. regarless of the fact that I had said this to Mrs Jones.
Most likely my comments to Mrs J got completely missed and over ridden by 'SOMEONE' who wanted to make it a bigger issue than it was.
((((((ST))))))) I'm cool
Someone speaking "nego"?
