So where does straight up dishonesty fall? I mean can one really have reasoned debate with someone who will simply say anything? And what of those who either knowingly or ignorantly repeat those lies? Where is the reasoned debate at that point? How much effort for a reasoned debate in that situtation?
This might be true of a formal debate but I see little relevance to an online forum. No single poster either by being reasonable or by ridiculing can
hold
up, suppress or drive forward a discussion.
I can hardly agree because I've just read a whole thread where Cedars started a topic about Watchtower's litigation response in the Condi case
and it was hit by a Mac Truck of ridicule and spun out of control. That topic is relevant to this topic as far as cause and effect is concerned.
I have to agree with Terry on this one.
To state it as briefly and concisely as possible:
Ridicule ends consideration of facts in discussion by pivoting away and saving the ridiculer the heavy lifting
by having to defend their position. It is argument by fraud.
