Is it plausible that Hold already has legal counsel and has been advised to plea not guilty?

Since the charges are capital crimes, it is almost automatic to plead innocence.

We have a governor that has decided to abolish Oregon's death penalty by simply saying he will commute all death sentences as long as he is governor. To hell with the state law.

Last year a death row inmate tried to drop all appeals and be executed. He was given a battery of psychological tests to prove he was not capable of such a decision. He was pronounced sane. Still, they would not recognize his request to be executed.

For a man in his twenties, like Holt, a life without hope of parole seems harsher than a death sentence.

    I agree with that

Looking at a life sentence behind bars is far more daunting to realize than simply having to put to death compassionately by lethal injection.

There is very little evidence to propose that he is not guilty before he was reprimanded and after.

I'm sure the prosecution realizes now the surmountable evidence placed against him, the probable reason they may have pushed for a not guilty plea,

is to let the case go to court, which will produce work for themselves. $$$

The best wasy to find information above might be, their first and last names of the four individuals in Elkhart, Indiana as reported. Then going to the Indiana statewebsite of courts, it may be possible to find the case records. Then probably more details from there.

The elders must have known he was disturbed.

Er.. Why is that? they are not trained in psychology they are not expert in assessing a risk like that. Anyway, if you took away the ones that we might call "disturbed" the congregations would be a lot smaller..

I am sure that the WTS will not want to get involved in his defense

24 years old and no indication of him being highly regarded in position of the congregation that he attended.
If he had stepped down from being MS a year ago, he would have only been 23 years old !

It's not that unusual to be appointed as an MS between ages 18-20.

If you pioneer right out of high school it's almost guaranteed that you'll be an MS by age 20.

I was appointed at age 24 and was not a ball of fire. Most of my peers (those that hadn't been DF'ed anyway) had already been appointed MS at younger ages.

My how things have changed !

The last congregation I went to there wasn't an MS or elder under the age of 30 or 40.

And the congs. close by were about the same.

I get the intuitive suspicion that Holt wasn't a shinning exemplary JWS.

and its not just because of this murder rap.

Yeah, I was 23 when made a MS and I wasn't a pioneer or anything. Make the majority of the meetings, be "seen" in FS, put in 10 hours or more a month, comment at every meeting and be "available" to do stuff around the hall and you're in. The bar to be a MS isn't very high, especially for a born-in. Actually for a born-in to not be a MS by their mid-twenties would be a major disappointment, at least around here.

Whether he used to be a MS is relevent to me only in that he story being told is that he was removed a year or so ago. I think they elders may have known he had some issues but quite frankly, MANY folks in the congregation have some sort of issues. The BOE isn't trained to spot potential killers and I seriously doubt they was anything they would have been able to do.

Plus, if there's a civil case to be had, it's going to need to be brought by either Clint or maybe Whitney's parents both of whom are JWs and are likely not going to try to go after the WTS or the local elders.

It will be interesting to see just how bizzare Holt was acting in the months leading up to this awful crime or if maybe the elders were involved in some respect but I'm not sure I see much exposure to the WTS at this point.

I hope justice is done (ie death penalty).
