A truce between Atheists and Non-Atheists?

When you say "Just respect and love everyone" it kind of sounds like you just want to be patted on the head when you share a thought, and just want to be listened to without any challenges.

Criticism of content should be delivered and accepted without it being delivered or taken as personal. We all hold personal beliefs of some nature . . . when we share them . . . we must accept that differing views will be expressed. Criticism should not be seen as negative . . . it's simply a counter argument and if that is stifled, then the value of these discussions is devalued. Obviously ad hominem (which comes in many forms) is at the heart of it . . . it derails and kills threads . . . and just chases people away. If something is logical and compelling, with supporting evidence, we can't be lazy . . . validity should be acknowledged . . . even if it runs counter to our position, it's still food for thought.

Hi Psac . . . nice points. More good points made all round . . . a worthwhile discussion, for the willing at least.

No, they are NOT idiots, and many of them do study science. The fact that they choose to believe in a divine being does not give anyone else the right to, in effect, call them morons. - Talesin

So when have you ever witnessed a believer being called an idiot or a moron? I can't recall any such incident.

There may be some occsions based not on their belief in the supernatural but in response to some especially offensive statement.

I think QCMBR has made some very useful and specific points I would be intersted in hearing how believers feel about them.

first, i fully recognize i've been a religious mud slinger and a part of the problem.

since joining up, i've noticed that there is no self regulation and a truce would be much easier to respect if both sides were to do so.

so nontheists should slap each other upside the head when we say something mean spirited to theists

theists should do the same when they say something mean spirited or baiting to nontheists

and i've also noticed, since joining, there's been some very mean spirited posts against muslims. there are very few here to defend against that. one of the few muslims on here just so happens to be an old friend from the hall i grew up in. surreal that we reconnected on here after so many years. i suspect, though i haven't asked, that he doesn't post much on here because of those sorts of posts. muslims aren't terrorists. we can point to any faith and see many examples of equally heinous acts. it would be nice if there wasn't so much silence in that regard. especially from fellow theists. after all, while there are many different flavors of theism, the endgame is all the same. there is a creator/god, who by virtue of life and creation, has earned the right to be worshipped/respected in some way shape or form.

at the very least, i think we can all agree that the jehovah's witnesses suck ass...that's something to build a truce on, right?

Tal and PSac, you both made helpful comments on page 6.

This is the sort of thing I'm talking about.

FHN, you clearly favor one side over another. So cheerleading a post that blasts atheists and lays the blame completely at their feet, only seems "helpful" to you.

OK, I'm really giving up now.

I wasn't laying the blame COMPLETELY at anyone's feet.

Truly sorry I tried to contribute something to this thread, Palm.

Alright, Tal. I guess you did demonstrate that at least atheists can be honest, see their part in the problem, take issue with their own and take responsibility.

    Thank you for that.

You weren't, Tal. You said something very peaceful and sensible, as did Psac in his first posts. Neither of you favored a side. Your posts were for all of us. They deserved to be highlighted. If this thread truly is about finding a truce, then you are leaning in the direction of truce and that is the middle ground.

Thank you. As always you light up my day.

I just saw this. Thank you, Gladiator, the feeling is definitely mutual.
