How important is evidence to your world view?

    Hey Tammy!

Loved your posts and clarity once again.

You are one of the most insightful, passionate and articulate, yet modest and humble believers I have come across. May you and yours continue to grow and be blessed on life's journey.

(Not saying any of us are anywhere near perfect though. At this time we continue to "disappoint" ourselves and others, just as observed in w79 12/15 p. 6.)

I pray that one day we might get to meet or even work together. If not in this crazy world, I know it will be in the next.

    Greetings and blessings

I probably have a 99% chance of dying from chronic disease because I have three of them. There's probably a small chance I might get killed by a train or a bus while I'm waiting, hence the 1%. But I'd be pissed if that happened . . . or maybe not.

Evidence based medicine identifies causes as well as treating synptoms. Identifiable contributing factors can be mitigated by diet or lifestyle changes as a result of evidence based medicine.

We learned from evidence that smoking is harmful. Campaigns to reduce smoking are as prevalent as treatments of heart or lung didease.

    Hey Chappy!

Sorry for not making the point more clear.

    I'll give it another shot.

As countries and governments we are spending ourselves into bankruptcy on very costly and somewhat statistically ineffective late stage interventions. This is driven by what we call "evidence based medicine". The outcome and evidence of failure is in the inexcusable and horrendous statistics above.

Many claim "evidence based medicine" is the way to go and is benefiting us greatly. How do we reconcile the two sets of contradictory evidence?

From a budget perspective we, as countries and governments, spend far too little on maintaining our "cars" (health) only to be faced with extortionist repair bills later on a "car" headed for certain, early and largely avoidable demise.

As to percentages and statistics, I wonder if it is correct to observe that 70% of Americans have a 100% chance of getting and dying from Chronic Disease?

Faith without evidence is blind and blind faith is a blight on this planet.

How many other things are their to die from apart from chronic disease or accidents? If prevention was 100% . . . most of us would live forever. I think increasing life spans are good evidence that both prevention and cure is at work. Chronic disease was much more prevalent just a century ago . . . because evidence of causitive factors was in much shorter supply, not just effective treatments. Knowledge of bacterial and viral infections have given rise to better hygeine practices as well as treatments. I still can't see the point being valid. Am I still missing something?

Oh, just read your comments, Fernando... thank you. May you and yours also grow in understanding and blessing. (Our lord knows that i am far from perfect, lol, so thank you for your blessing and prayer)

I pray that one day we might get to meet or even work together. If not in this crazy world, I know it will be in the next.

    I look forward to it.

    Peace to you,

My once favourite religion kept me spiritually blind and passive, whilst also telling me that exercise, nutrition and education were not all that important.

The evidence tells a different story...

I hope to regain some lost health and opportunities with new insights...

Since realising that I had been gullible, and swallowed much of the teaching of the WT/JW's all my life without analysis, I have decided that I will try and gather all the evidence I can on important issues , so as to make the very best decisions.

Such evidence needs to be of the kind that would satisfy a "Jury" made up of sceptical and skilled, informed people , anything less is simply not good enough to base ones world-view on, and certainly not good enough to base ones decisions on.

I do not belittle areas of debate and of research that are not purely scientific, we explore our own feelings for instance, not something we can have peer reviewed ! We, and others, may think about many philosophical questions, or possibilities for discovery in the future, none of this is "fact", but to a degree may shape my/your worldview.

Just take the concept that our known physical Universe is not "all there is", there are many other possibilities, multi-verses etc etc, as I do not discount these possibilities, they do shape my view, not just of the world , but of the Universe.

And yet they are not "Scientific" in any way, they cannot be tested, but much of where we are today has come from such thinking, by people like Einstein and later Stephen Hawking etc

What would "trump" my view on matters ? certainly not the Bible (discredited as "Authority" for me) or any man made scripture, and certainly not just the view of one person, even be he/she an Einstein or a Marie Curie, I need something solid to base lifes actions on.

I think it's probably as important as it is to the average person

I like evidence, especially where evidence CAN be had but I always keep in mind that evidence doesn't equal proof.
