We have a lot of police in Florida who got their start up north in NYC or Boston- so they arrest folks for stuff that would be a crime up north, but not in Florida- like carrying a 12" bowie knife on your belt in plain sight-- the real crime is resisting the false arrest- that is the one they ultimately stick you with.
Okay Folks, it's Time to be like ....Canada

Kurt, your story, though tragic (J/K), says nothing about banned books. Some Customs Agent thought your brother's survival books, along with military MREs, could indicate you planned to disappear into the mountains - it happens. Oh, and your travel guides, too. Canadian Customs Agents are known for being assholes sometimes (you'll get no argument from me on that level - been there, ayup *snickers*). But that has absolutely NOTHING to do with 'banning books'. tsk tsk
Oh, and my mistake on the obelisk. Not a cenotaph, but a border marker. Sry.

The agents made it very clear that they were taking issue with the books. So do you want to do some semantics? How about that the books weren't banned, but we were banned for having the books? Does that work for you?
I get it that some people disappear into the mountains and it might be on their minds, but we were not provisioned up for that. I only had a single change of clothes and a day bag. I never criticized them, they were doing their job of banning potential trouble, and they made it clear that the books were involved. I am talking about both customs agents and immigration agents. I even complimented one of the immigration agents, and told her I wish she were working on our southern border.

Apparently my brother had a box in the trunk with some survival books, living in the woods books and a few MRE type items. There were no weapons or anything that would trigger concern with any sane border agent. So we were escorted from the customs area to the immigration area.
The above is Very NORMAL in Canada. They think that folks come up to live off the land so to speak- and yes they were worried you would be in Canada, live there and voila, finally become a citizen
They worry

the Books were for your initial survival capabilities. Thats all all very normal in a country that has strict guidelines.
Did they ask how much $$$$ you have with you? That sets them off also

Oh yes, and I had about $100 with me, about right for a day or two. I knew not to show up broke, but also not to have lots of cash. Canada is much stricter about who gets let in to visit and to stay than the US is, and the difference shows.

Yeah, what can you say?
I got my comeuppance though.
A few years ago I went to Alaska. I was sitting in an eatery enjoying some seafood chowder with huge chunks of halibut, clams and crab legs in a chowder soup base. A Canadian couple was sitting next to me and we were talking, and it suddenly clicked in my mind. Canada was way to the east, and south of me. Take that, border guard persons!!
