betterdaze- What I am suggesting is that we look at the educational system of the Scandinavian countries and also Germany with the Duale Ausbildung Apprenticeship program and other social support systems like universal health care to see how we can put our youth on a better path in life. If a Paul Slater can be helped before sociopathic patterns mature its a better investment for us all.

350,000,000 guns in private hands. We can and will shoot criminals, that is a given in our country. Changing the root causes of our social ills is more complex but will have a much better outcome.

this whole story doesn't sound like anyones but the intruders life was in danger. if he'd noticed someone's at home he most probably wouldn't even have tried to enter. while i do think the shooting is justified, a "unprepared" gun owner, or even a knife owner, would have warned the intruder before taking action. all this preparation seems to develop some trigger happy reflexes.

i wonder what the kids who saw this think about it.

Talk about kids seeing murder. The famous 'gun toting soccer mom' Meleanie Hain who always carried a 9mm Glock was shot and killed by her NRA card carrying Parole Officer husband in front of the kids.

I don't think that anyone will argue that using a firearm to defend and protect yourself and your family is a bad thing.

The issue is that not everyone uses them for that.

Does owning a firearm not specific to hunting cause the owner to think in terms of 'guns as a solution' ie The Florida Pizza incident.

    Yes, of course it does.

Proper training in the use and saftey of a firearm shoudl be mandatory.

Agreed. I would also not be opposed to mental health evaluations or capping the nunber of rounds in a magazine to 10. Also, creating a standardized (by state) class for firearms training and concealed carry. I did my concealed carry class a while back, I really didn't need to spend an hour of the class hearing about Jesus and another hour hearing about how evil Democrats are.

How does proper training in guns translate into how the Parole Officer and the Pizza guy handled their situations. Without a gun in their hand wouldn't they have had to use that old fashioned tool- 'speech' to argue their case.

Proper training in firearms should make it clear that the firearm is a LAST resort weapons of defence and protection.

We often speak of the homicides vai firearms but manypeople lose their lives via acidental (stupidity) firearm shootings.

Safety courses are a must in that regard.
