I don't know if that would be the reason, but "expelled" has a worse emotional connotation than "excommunicated". there is no exact translation for "disfellowhipped" that I am aware of.
Aside from the WT's hang-up with the word "excomunicar" used in some worldy religions, I think the main issue that the WT has had with translating the word "Disfellowship" into Spanish is that (in many regions in South America) it is actually translated "Desasociado" which translates back into English as "Disassociated"...
So DF'd would actually be the same as DA'd by dictionary definition in many regions... For obvious reasons, they needed to come up with a word that wouldn't come back as DA'd... hence, the word "Expulsado"...
