    Have you ever seen this:

An Open letter to the Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses

    [Edited only for format]

    Dear Brothers,

I served for 7 years as an Elder in the Christian Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. I recently relinquished this privilege for the following reasons:

    1. My whole life I was taught that Armageddon is going to be here any moment and is imminent. The direction from the Holy spirit said that the end was going to come in 1914, 1925, 1975, Before the end of the twentieth century, and you would never grow old or fulfill any career. It didn't happen. "Imminent" and "soon" has stretched on for over 100 years. These interpretations of bible prophecy have proven to be false yet you continue to pretend that they were directed by Jehovah.

    2. I was taught that there would be few anointed left when the end came and that the number will decrease as the end drew near. The number of anointed is increasing.

    3. I was told that field service is a life saving work that must be performed with a sense of urgency. So far not one persons life has been saved, and even though it is "urgent" the antiquated method of calling on empty houses is used as the primary way of trying to reach people. Television, internet, email, postal service, social networking are not used even though the effectiveness of these methods are proven. I doubt that you feel that this is a lifesaving work yourself.

    4. We are taught as an organization that the light gets brighter as Jehovah blesses his servants with Holy Spirit and increased understanding. Is Jehovah responsible for flip flopping doctrines such as the generation of Matt. 24:34, organ transplants, Blood transfusions, the superior authorities etc. or is it men who claim to be inspired? Despite these changes each time credit/blame is given to Jehovah. If the Faithful and Discreet slave were actually inspired, faithful, or discreet, these teachings would have never changed.

    5. We are taught that we live in a spiritual paradise and associate with the safest group of people on earth. As Elders we were given instructions in some cases not to tell the authorities or to warn the congregation. The organization has tried in the past to sweep the problem under the rug, and continues to do so in the misguided effort to protect its reputation.

    6. Disfellowshipping as practiced within the organization, cannot be found in the scriptures. Would Jesus have treated sinners the way that we as Witnesses treat sinners?

    7. I was taught that the United Nations organization is the wild beast described in Revelation and is one of the organizations controlled by Satan. Despite this, the Watchtower Society was partners of the UN for a number of years as a Non-Governmental Organization. This is the height of hypocrisy.

    8. Even though the "truth" changes, if you believe something other than what is published as the latest light (right or wrong) you can be disfellowshipped. I have seen this personally happen and remain anonymous because of fear that this will happen to me.

    9. 1914 cannot be proved by scripture as the end of the Gentile times. No one other than the Witnesses believes that Jerusalem was destroyed in 607 BCE. Brother Russell used the Great Pyramid of Giza's measurements to corroborate 1914 as the end of the Gentile times. The calculation arbitrarily uses a lunar year of 360 days to come to a date based on a solar year of 365.25 days.

    10. Even though I have been told repeatedly that world conditions are deteriorating in fulfillment of Matt. 24 Earthquakes are not increasing in frequency according to the USGS. Crime rates have dropped dramatically according to the Department of Justice. The life span of mankind has risen dramatically since 1914 as pestilence is treated, controlled, or eradicated according to the Department of Health. Food shortages are decreasing. Wars are not increasing.

    11. Even though I pray through Jesus to Jehovah, I am taught and am expected to teach that Jesus is not our mediator. This is despite what the Bible says at 1 Tim. 2:5,6.

Brothers, these are some of the reasons that caused me to resign serving as an Elder. I cannot with a good conscience support an organization that pretends to be something that it is not, just as I cannot pretend to be something or someone that I am not.

I ask that you consider the large number of appointed men resigning as a symptom to a larger problem within the organization. The problem is the Governing Body assumes an arrogant and authoritarian position in that it acts as God’s sole channel here on earth today. I can see it, many others have seen it and are quitting because of it. The vast majorities that resign are not doing so because they want to live an immoral life without Godly principles, they resign because they are men of principle.

You cannot control people’s thoughts and intentions, even as much as you would like to. Jehovah created each of us with a sense of fairness and honesty, and most importantly free will.

Members of the Governing Body, I ask you to act as men of principle yourself. Allow people to have the freedom to choose for themselves whether they want to be a part of your organization or not, and if they choose to leave, allow them to do so without sanctions. Honestly admit it if you are not sure of a scriptural interpretation, do not force people to believe something that you are not convinced of yourself. Do not allow past mistakes in policy or doctrine to continue to morph into future mistakes that may cost people their families or even their lives. Lastly, protect the people under your spiritual care not through secrecy, but through transparency, with the foremost quality of love in mind.

    Your Brother,

    SIAM

I think the idea of flooding a media outlet (NBC, nytimes, latimes) on a particular day is far more productive than sending letters to any branch office.

At this point, it would be more effective to create a stir about the witnesses like the recent one about Scientology, hopefully helping those not-yet-in to get out before they make a huge mistake

I really don't think sending a letter to an invididual KH will do anything --- goes right into the trash.

    I'm in.

The media will need something "sound bite"-ish. The shorter the better. They won't be interested in anything doctrinal or that can only be understood by people "in the know". Shunning and/or paeophilia will be the only thing the media would be interested in.

    Thanks Okage

I can only suggest from political work and lobbying that people alter their own letters enough so they appear to be written by the individual. When I worked for a U.S. Senator, the indivually written letters, even simple ones, were treated very diffierently from petitions or pledge cards that only required a signature.

The letters need not be elaborate.

During law school, law women set up a desk in the main lobby with paper, pens, and stamps. Almost everyone stopped for about five minutes to write sometihng short. There were about four of us behind the desk. As more people joined, others were curious and stopped.

There must be some way to replicating it in a forum.

Penton's book, Apocalypse Delayed, details how the Witnesses lost droves after 1975 and the ever increasing control that resulted from the failure. It happened throughout the world.

In fact, this action reminds me of the letters of correspondence movement before the American Revolutionary War.

    I will try my best.

    okage - I'm 100 % in too -

for a well thought out, and well evolved plan. Please, Don't rush this thing. IMO members will not lose interest over time, if they see a credible and respectable format adopted.

I writhe in my bed at nights, thinking about this effort ,since your initial post.- thank you for caring and persisting.

Get some prototypeson here right away, and seek the intellectuals ( JWN has dozens and dozens) ideas . For example, to refine the goals (You see- even EP is curious! - that's wonderful!)

Perfect the wording to say concisely and forthrightly what are issues that disgrace the wts, and violate decent peoples sensibilities etc.

Thousands, just like us, are boiling inside and read JWN, because others are better able to express what we feel.

I agree with "Band on the Run "

If the letters look individual they will have to handle them differently.

If they all look alike they can just easily screen them and trash them .

Also email campaigns sent to media outlets could stir something up additional.

00Dad, I love the idea of that letter. My idea is to include that idea, but to include a vague, personal story. I also feel from feedback on others' threads that the moment the WT reads that the writer stopped being a JW, they disregard the rest. But it is a well-detailed letter.

Entirely Possible, I gave major details. Those wanting to help build the movement are willing to help tailor the minor details. I don't want an Okage plan to be successful, I want JWN to be the entity responsible for making the public more aware. I meant it on my "Would this work" thread: JWN has alot of clever, resourceful people. It wasn't just pandering. JWN deserves to have it's name under "winner" in the record books. I'll take credit for shortcomings but with those willing to attach themselves to this plan, I don't see it going through with errors.

Gone for Good, the date was the closest I could get to Breakfast of Champions' June 16th suggestion. June 16th is a Sunday and it's Father's Day in the U.S. I think for the effort, four months is sufficient. If it makes a ding, we can go for the dent before Christmas. And on top of this being influenced by BlindersOff, it was your fire on my exodus thread that committed me to action. I figure there are so many with your passioned stance who don't say anything because of the mental wear and tear. We will speak because they can't.

Breakfast of Champions, the letters to the Kingdom Halls are intended to be therapeutic. If the majority of us involved feel futility in sending to Watchtower employees, I would openly alter the plan to be letters to agreed upon major news outlets coupled with letters to outlets within regional constraints , ie.: Send a letter to the Guardian, then to a smaller, more local outlet.

Extractor, email me with ideas at [email protected] I can ramble so examples of brevity and buzzwords will be necessary. We can teach ourselves how to reach out to the media and pique their interest in our writings.

Band on the Run, as with Extractor, email me and help me out with something. Your reference to revolution makes this movement feel so much more badass. I'm inspired to write our own Declaration of Independence. I need any help with that I can get so I don't wind up writing a Declaration of War.

If any of you know someone who may take interest in our idea, shoot them to this thread. I asked for three simple keystrokes and a mouseclick and the idea got paragraphs of love. We will refine this idea and pass it on.

We do need to send letters to news outlets, big and small.

    okage -

Declaration of Independence - Yeah, I like how you think my boy!

One evening this past summer, after 20 years of benevolent co-existancee, my daughter, and her husband, got all dressed up like the good JWs they are and drove all the way to my house - to tell me they would no longer associate with me - at all.

I told them, I was going to continue to visit their house whenever I passed by their town, just like I always have. WELL! You should have seen the reaction the first time I dropped in - they reacted EXACTLY like those trapped householders ln field service would - flustered, tongue tied, embarrassed , demanding respect for their religious views - the whole thing.

It was sad and comical at once. I refuse to be cowed or separated from people who know i love them , and I know love me.

F.U. watchtower for interfering in the sacred, natural affections of family -disgracefull.

Writing to the headquarters and kingdom halls will result in nothing more than a massive increase in paper recylcling.

writing to the media will probably result in much the same. They are not interested.

I wish I was enthusiastic about this idea, but i can't be. Witnesses are too well trained and anything that didn't come from Brooklyn is so quickly identified as apostate (even if it is nothing more than a set of their own quotes) that it just goes into the trash on auto pilot. And the ones that may read it are probably already on the way out mentaly anyway.

Brooklyn and branches no doubt have suitably 'spiritual' drones appointed to filter all the emails and mail for similar things, and they too would get dealt a swift pitch into the trash can. Several people/groups have sent brooklyn lengthy correspondance outlining their errors and pleas for change, some even 'disfellowshipping' the Governing Body. I am sure corespondance from ex jws falls somewhere between pesky apostate persecution and sillyness in the GB's eyes.

The media has long shown apathy towards the subject of jehovah's witnesses. The legal system has no interest in them either (other than rare cases such as the Conti one). Not even child abuse, the current bogey man attached to religion seems to stir the media to attention unless it is the Catholic church.

I would need more convincing myself...i don't need self therapy in the form of letter writing to people who frankly think i don't even exist. I too have layed awake wondering how to 'attack' the Watchtower, to flood kingdom halls with flyers, to flood individual JWs mailbox with stuff and even to taking out a whole page in a national newspaer as an adv but in the end decide that my time is better spent working on those i can help, my kids. Once i feel they are not ever going back, i hope to forget the Watchtower alltogether. Don't know if that will happen...i still seem to be addicted to JWN!

I know, I know...all that is needed for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing, so I also feel kinda bad being 'negative'
