I remember hanging onto Lindsey's every word when I was a teen in the 70s. Then I got onto Salem Kirban, then I started to get exposed to Barry's stuff. One thing I've noticed about all pre-millennialists, including JWs, is how convinced they are that their timetable is absolutely and irrefutably the right one, modelled from the Bible, yet they all disagree with each other on so many points, even though they often use the same scriptures in their searches.
"This generation" started in 1948.

Steph.
Lindsey reckons the "Time of the gentiles" ended in 1948 .
If he goes by that being a 2520 year period, that would mean they started in 572 bc.
Any Idea what the event was that took place then, to start them??
I cant find any reasoning on it in my materials.
???Of course this ENTIRE predictive framework is supported upon the notion that "Figtree = Israel".
A pretty damn big leap of assumption.
Take that away, the whole thing collapses in a screaming heap! -

I might have a look tonight and see if I can find it, RF; was wondering whether or not to pick up The Late Great Planet Earth for a laugh... {:)]

Just had a leaf through "The Late Great...", but didn't find much. I've got a feeling Lindsey's 1988 calculations are in There's a New World Coming".
There's no reason to assume that any of these end times prophets will use the same numbers as others to arrive at their dates. For example, Barry (I know, I know, but he's the one I study extensively!) uses a simple and quite literal system. He starts with the assumption that "a thousand years is as a day to the Lord" (why do they never apply the other half of that verse and have the Millennium only being a day long??). He then calculates two "days" between Adam and Abraham, two between Abraham and Jesus, then 2 between Jesus and the year 2000. He thus has 6 "days" which reflect the six days of Creation. The seventh day, upon which God rests will, under Barry's scheme, be the Millennium. Which explains why he was so determined to link the end to the Y2K bug. So much so that he writes the following in the Foreword of his latest book, I Spy with my Little Eye: "By the 1st January, 2000, the economy as we know it today, will cease to exist!"

okay.
Theres a new young gun on the prophetic scene for the fundies, and hes called Grant R Jeffrey.
Take a headache pill before you read this, heres what he has to say on the "time of the Gentiles".
Book- "Armaggedon, appointment with destiny".
page 39:
..."The end of the captivity in Babylon, according to the Bible and other sources, is recorded as having occured in 536 bc. This date is the starting point for our calculations.
2520 Biblical years x 360 =907,200 days.
Converting this figure into our calender year of 365.25 days and dividing 365.25 into 907,200 dayswe reach a total of 2483.8 calender years. (keeping in mind there was only 1 year between 1 bc and 1 ad)
Therefore, the end of Israels worldwide captivity would occur after a total of 2483.8 years had elapsed from the spring of 536 bc"...A very elaborate chart then follows, which, regrettably, I cannot reproduce.
Suffice to say Jeffreys calculation add up to May 15, 1948!!

Lindsey, from his 1994 book (published after the 1988 non event)
"Planet Earth 2000" says:
..."some people point out that 40 years have already passed since the rebirth of Israel and Jesus has not returned"...
just in case noone noticed that nothing happened in 1988. Then:..
..."My recent study of Daniel 9 v24-27 has convinced me that the capture of Jerusalem in 1967 may be a more prophetically significant event than the rebirth of the nation. In June of that year the Jews recaptured Jerusalem and reestablished a lasting sovereignty over it for the first time since the Babylonian destruction in the 6th century bc"...Sounds to me exactly like the Watchtower's date shuffling: "Oh, did we say the last days would end in 1914? We meant that's when they would begin!! New light, dont'cha know! And what were you saying about 1957?"
After 2007, I have to guess that Hal Lindsey will decide that some other date was even more important than 1967 and 1948. Or maybe he'll actually redefine the length of a "generation"!! Sound familiar?
The only thing Hal Lindsey has working in his favor is that, as far as I know, he's never claimed prophetic status or to be speaking on God's behalf.

If you were going to use this sort of cockamamie chronology to calculate dates for prophetic events, why would you calculate the "end of the Gentile Times" from the end of the Babylonian captivity? Clearly, when God's own people were captive in Babylon, the Gentiles were in control, and the Gentile Times must have been running!
Not that I endorse the entire interpretation of the Gentile Times as presented; but I'm just pointing out its internal inconsistency...

Cockamamie is right.Dont you love Jeffreys infallible mathematics?
Figures dont lie!
The whole point of posting this stuff is to show the similarities with the dubs.
Now you say that Lindsey, in your experience, has not claimed to be a prophet and speak for God huh??
Well, I'll just have to look into that one and see what I can dig up.

Hal Lindsey as 'prophet'
A few quotes from "Late Great Planet Earth".
page55:
..."how could Ezekial 2600 years ago, have forecast so accurately the rise of Russia to its current military might and its direct and obvious designs upon the middle east, not to mention the fact that it is now an implacable enemy of the state of Israel?...The answer is again, it seems to this writer, obvious. Ezekial once again passes the test of a prophet. He was guided by the spirit of the living God"...
Now Lindsey is saying this in connection with statements that Russia is "Gog of Magog", and will lead a confederacy including East Germany,
Czechoslovakia, Poland etc, in a Communist attack upon Israel.
And he is claiming that this is what EZEKIAL says in the Bible.
In fact, this is erroneous,
Ezekial does not say "Russia, Poland etc".
Hal Lindsey says "Russia Poland etc".
Hal is claiming the Authority of Ezekial for his own speculations.
This makes him a false prophet,in my opinion, because his speculations have proven erroneous. Events in the real political world have debunked him.
heres another:
page 61:
.."in writing this book too many pieces have fallen into place for us to believe they could all be "coincidence". This is why we believe
what one vague religionist has called "the divine hand from somewhere"
set the stage the week we began this chapter"...
Now what is that, other than a claim that God caused events to occur in the World because Hal had started writing chapter 6 that week?.(without prejudice)
