What is it about the game Soccer that brings out the most destructive behaviour of a minority of fans, which seems to be a global problem

In europe ,south america ,and elsewhere ,riotous behaviour seems to go hand in hand with soccer fans , destruction of property and even death has occured why is that ? We have just recently had an episode at Etihad Stadium in melbourne this past weekend where thousands of dollars damage was caused and flares ignited which could have caused injury to spectators, who , would have included families with children who just wanted to enjoy the game .I beleive their were something like 40000 spectators present ,which in all fairness mostly were well behaved, except for this lawless minority.

Melbourne is not used to this behaviour at sporting events ,many of our events host thousands more spectators without anywhere near the trouble that was had at the weekend .

Australian rules football , AFL in Victoria ,certainly produces fanatical supporters , me included , at some games 60 , 80, 100,000 in attendance ,yet never apart from a fight breaking out here or their , have we ever experienced something like that .

So , what is wrong with Soccer League Fans . ?

Smiddy hi there .. I never could figure out this kind of behaviour

    >

Mind you getting all excited about a game sports is not my

idea of a whole lot of fun! (ok, maybe the odd game of hockey)

    >

Maybe it is the meaness inside a person, that acts so badly,

not caring who they are hurting. Meaness that gets buried from

early experiences or the daily grind in a 'dog eat dog' world!

    >

Maybe the rough quick actions trigger aggression just like they

do with the animals ... you know, when you run from a dog,

cougar, or bear, a deadly instinct will set in and a chase to

    the death will begin ...........................yikes!

    I may even hate sports........

Perhaps because under the current rules, its mostly a tedious, negative game dominated by defenders where strikers can hardly get in the penalty area or a decent shot in. I mean teams get a point for a 0-0 draw for pity's sake, and there are loads of 0-0 draws. FIFA is clueless, no vision. Football is screaming out for a revolution to tweak the rules and make the game more attacking and exciting.

Its tribal behaviour. The football club provides a substitute tribe, a sense of group identity for young males.

yadda - I could not disagree more. It is the beautiful game for people with an attention span longer than a few seconds. Some of the best games I have ever watched ended 0-0 or 1-0

The skills are far greater than in most other team sports.

I have no answer youtube shows fans stabbing players invading the field to attack...most countries have riot police on the side....dont get it.

I agree with cofty. As a season ticket holder I am amazed how much emotion it evokes. I would never shout some of the things I do at a football match anywhere else. It is a very curious phenomenon.

Do the fruitless efforts of the players bring frustration to the spectators?

The game is a joke IMO. Players taking dives constantly (cheating). It is embarassimg to watch.

I don't know why some fans are incited to violence. . . . . maybe it's because we are deep into the last of the last days of Satans system.

Diving is an issue with a minority of players. It may happen once or twice in a game - not constantly. It is by far the most skillful and dynamic of team sports.
