What is it about the game Soccer that brings out the most destructive behaviour of a minority of fans, which seems to be a global problem

The skills are far greater than in most other team sports.

    Players taking dives constantly (cheating)

Diving is an issue with a minority of players. It may happen once or twice in a game - not constantly. It is by far the most skillful and dynamic of team sports.

Are the skills greater than in most other team sports? Or is it by far the most skillful and dynamic of team sports?

I am not really going to debate which sports skill set you appreciate the most, obviously you find football(soccer) the most entertaining. But surely you could understand that not everyone is going to agree with that. Even the worlds best players would marvel at the abilities of other sports players (basketball, rugby, AFL, baseball).

There are many players in the NRL that can squat over 160kgs, bench more than 130kgs, run the 100metres in around 11 secs, and are involved in over 50 collisions a game that would see the average soccer player suffer horrific injuries. It is all subjective, I don't think any sport can make the claim to being the most skillful and dynamic. Sport isn't just skill, circus performers are skillful but that ain't sport.

I get annoyed at the AFL vs NRL arguments we have in oz, not everyone is going to have the same pov.

Its like asking who is the greatest drummer of all time. There is no definitive answer.

I like rugby. When we get youngsters who are a bit chubby and lack the skills to be a footballer we send them to the rugby club.

American football is a succession of "set-pieces" the ball is never in open play for more than a few seconds at a time. Moves are worked out in advance of each play. Baseball is even more tedious it is almost as slow as cricket.

In football the play is 100% open and unpredictable at every moment. The speed strength, agility, tactics, movement off the ball and quick thinking is second to none.

I can't comment on Aussie rules footy. Maybe you have a point there.

Sorry to hijack the thread smiddy. . . . but I can't help but talk about sport. I know someone who says, 'never trust a man that does not like sport'. . . . wise words.

The point I was trying to make cofty, is that everyone has different tastes, and it is not really possible to define which game is the most skillful, dynamic, exciting, unpredictable and so on. There is off the ball movement in every team sport. There is offside in soccer so it is not exactly 100% open, whereas in aussie rules there are a million people on the field and no offside. ( I don't personally like it all that much)

I know in oz, many of the Aussie rules and rugby league coaches love the NFL for its tactical aspect, and the size and strength of the players. Cricket players appreciate the ability of the baseball players and vice versa.

99% of the world best soccers players wouldnt last one tackle, one play, one pitch, one ball in another sport, but that does not mean anything. It is just that soccers players can't play other( less skillful?) sports perhaps.

And also, the NRL in oz is by far the best rugby competition in the world. Chubby youngsters who lack skills will have to settle for rugby union. . . . or the Australian soccer league

Yes I agree Australian soccer is awful ;)

Here is one of the coaching vids I made a while ago for the u19s at my club. It's got 7 goals to keep non-footy fans entertained...

Is the correlation between the perceived violence in the game football (soccer), the soccer game itself or the availability of alcohol, low cost of admission, and size of the crowds? I like watching soccer games and I have noticed that soccer games are cheaper to attend than other professionally played games.

People with low self-esteem who work in low paying jobs are more likely to be able to pay for a soccer game and enjoy a few beers with their friends. Large crowds of intoxicated, low-self esteem people, who closely identify with THEIR team is a volitile mixture. Do you know of anyone who brawls at a soccer game that actually owns a team?

Peace be with you and everyone, who you love,

    Robert

P.S. - The best soccer game I watched in person was in the semi-finals of the World Cup in Seville in 1982 between France and Germany and went into triple overtime. It was a magical night and I saw no fights.

It's just another form of gang culture. Base tribalism.

It's opium for the gum chewing masses.

The funniest bit is when the managers give some profound synopsis and insight into the game.

    Yeah. Ok.

I understand the game but I don't understand the fanaticism.

I used to play for my school and loved it, but now it seems like the 'family' element has gone and it's dominated by a neanderthal underclass.

Even the players are no longer gentlemen sportsmen, they are the thuggish louts who are idolised by the chanting masses.

It's a shame it has plummeted so far.

You sound like a old git moaning about "young people nowadays".

There are around 400-500 players playing in the highest level of the English game. Some are intelligent, family men, a few are arrogant self-obsessed idiots.

In terms of crowd violence it has a long way still to go but it has improved massively since the 80s. When was the last time you were at a game?
