    Finkelstein:

The archaeological evidence suggests that the Israelites arose peacefully and internally in the highlands of Canaan ;in the words of archaeologist William Dever , "most of those who came to call themselves Israelites ... were or had been indigenous Canaanites." What distinguished Israel from other emerging Iron Age Canaanite societies was the belief in Yahweh as the national god, rather than, for example, Chemosh , the god of Moab , or Milcom , the god of the Ammonites .

    mP:

That last sentence makes no sense, it shows each peoples each with their own national main/father God.

THe jews were not peaceful, you might want to check out all their peaceful rebellions against non jews in the Roman Empire, like when they killed 20k+ in Cyrene etc. This anti jew animosity is what made the Romans come to destroy jersualem in 70AD.

Which god are we talking about here? Thor? Odin? Zeus? Yahweh? I think some are more touchy than others...maybe you should ask him? Whichever god 'him' is...

You could always call him....Mr God...

es, Jehovah is not a feature of the NT. I agree totally. It is discuss here

ISV Mt 23:9 ‘don't call anyone on earth 'Father,' because you have only one Father, the one in heaven’

And Paul never discusses anything about Jesus. The NT is basically a merger of many different religions, one Jewish, another kinda Gnostic(Paul) for the gentiles. IN this fine tradition the RCC adopted many other pagan gods maing them saints, adding ho.idays for them etc.

Jehovah is never named in the NT because it would put one side off, so sticking to God keeps all sides happy.

If He gives his name to someone for them to use, then it cannot be disrespectful to use that name. If you are introducing your father to someone else, you often say, this is my dad, 'so and so'.

That being said, I do find it more intimate and respectful to say, Father or Father in heaven, as Christ taught... if I am praying to Him.

    TEC:
But what is Jehovahs name ? Hes got dozens of different names in the BIble. Early in Exodus 3 i think God tells Moses that Abraham knew him as El Shaddai. Strange that a friend of Jehovah for 100+ years didnt know his "real name". How exactly do you explain that ? What we see in Jehovah is the same as Jupiter and Zeus, same God different names for different peiples.

If gods name is so important why is it absent from the NT ?

    Still:

    Zeus

    mP:

You do realise that Zeus means "God". Originally it was pronounced more like Deus aka Dios and so on. Its just an archaic form of the word.

Jupiter aka Deu pater literally means Sky God.

He has been called by different titles (and perhaps also different names by different cultures)... but He does make it clear who He is, when He tells Moses His name. The God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob.

How do you know that Abraham did not know His name? Just because He was referred to by a title El Shaddai (God Almighty, God Most High), does not mean that Abraham did not know his name.

If you need a name, then it shows that 'god' isn't in you.
