Which Bible translation are you using, Perry? And what is the context of the Zechariah verses?

    Hi, Scooter!

As a pioneer and as a regular publisher I avoided long discussions on the doors. I liked to be as brief as possible. My father always stood for an hour or more on a door when I was very young and you had to pay attention.

    Interesting scriptures.

My view on Christ changed some years after I stopped preaching. I was having a chat with an elder about Thomas then John 1:1 and what they mean by a god.

I think the penny dropped. Funny thing was a Baptist had talked to me and I couldn't see it. An elder came round and I suddenly see it differently

You find a good explanation here:

The KJV is offering a wrong translation of the hebrew text in order to suit the trinitarian perspective. It should read:

(v10) "They will look on me ABOUT whom they have pierced" That's why the next verse says "They will mourn HIM ..." The object of the piercing isn't Jehovah (the "me", subject), but someone else (the "him" and the "whom", object of the piercing), the "firstborn".

Eden- that was educational and explained simply enough.

man oh man- There is a vast difference between Judaism's Messiah and the NT Jesus. Also, when a Christian says 'the Bible' they mean the OT and NT, when a Jew speaks of the Bible it is only the OT and really the Torah.

I think that any JW reading the Gospel of John as though they had never heard the WT spin on it would be struck by the thought that Jesus was indeed God inthe flesh. It is the central theme of the Gospel from chapter 1 v14 onward, along with the significance of the Cross in being saved.

I think many of the Christian anti wt literature points out the Zechariah 12:1-10 scripture to use when jw's knock on their doors. I remember asking my jw about it years ago, blank stare, change the subject. For some Christians it seems so obvious surely a jw would have noticed this? so maybe they forget to bring it up.

When I bring up scriptures that you guys (ex jw's) are surprised about or start a thread with "Did you see this......" to a Christian friend they are amazed a jw did not know that certain scripture. Why? because jw's claim to know their bible all the time and appear to when they are at the doors because they know how to quickly find the the few they memorize. Show them one like above and they get confused or try to change the subject and want to come back!

They come to MY door telling me I need to read the bible yet they don't know some basic Christian doctrine? -- is what many think after a visit by a jw.

Point being- basic christian doctrines on Jesus are a mix of many religious beliefs, very few of which are the Jewish Messiah.

The problem here isn't so much a translation problem, it's a textual one.

John was quoting from the septuagint, not the Masoretic Text (which the JPS uses).

    Look at the NWT.

John 19:37 And, again, a different scripture says: "They will look to the One whom they pierced."
