Hey Pickler, do you live in Australia? 14 and 9 months was the age here. In Queensland now I'm not sure what the age is, but you have to be 'earning or learning' until the age of 17 before you can qualify for any government assistance.

Funny about the window washers/casual retail-type job holders. What do they do when they have families? Either bludge off the government child care benefit or work to death. I know a sister who hadn't worked since she had her first kid at 19 and had her husband work 7 days a week to support the family in a newish rental house. She wanted a bedroom for each of the three children in new estate, rather than an older house and having the kids share. So the poor hubby had to work 7 days at his low paying job. So marry a hard working man! That's the way.

I lucked out on that one. I earn more than my husband.

This really caught my attention. I do not think there has been any changes todate. Probably, its still the same thing today in most if not all the Kingdom Halls.

In many, the less educated you were the better you were regarded. I knew of some who reveled in their ignorance like it was a badge of spirituality. People would brag that they'd never read anything not published by the wt. I'd go to ppl's houses and find nothing on the book shelf except Jw books. My experience is too that the more money some jws had the more they were admired and encouraged to give to the KH, WTS. They give just enough to get the admiration.

I do remember a "brother" who was a carpenter who worked with the RBC until I found out he was on disability because of his carpenter job. I pointed that out to the ones in charge that if someone drove by a site and saw him, they could be "stumbled." Some how the carpenters' union found out forcing him to stop or lose it.

It sincerely pisses me off. So you have a person at your door that will.....if you progress long enough in your "bible study"......begin to teach you that the world's governments are all evil and deserving of destruction.......yet this same person will gladly accept free handouts from this same evil and corrupt government?

Several decades back, most JWs were responsible people (for the most part, anyway). It is my observation that over time, however, the demographic seems to have changed for the worse. Far too many are collecting some sort of benefit. I am not referring to retirees, either. Being as I am not the only one who has noticed this, it is not only in my general area. This trend is likely world-wide. On the whole, the religion has experienced not only a "brain" drain but a "class" drain.

In a nutshell, this is a very damaging religion for a responsible person to be in!!

The damage is not only from the ridiculous teachings but also from the deadbeat individuals a person is surrounded by, which is not something I would tolerate and part of the reason I am glad to be out !

Well it's a slow spiral into poverty. With all these self employed dubs running around with no retirement or even SS, sinc ethen didn't contribute into the program, they will end up with about $500 a month to live on. Over the next 20 years as the boomers retire, these boomers will be on the far end of the scale of peoople who didn't prepare at all

This dub practice is done in the same spirit as fundamentalist Mormons who use government assistance to support their polygamy and the numerous children it produces. And they, too, demonize the government that makes their disgusting practice possible.

MANY JWs were on welfare and were encouraged to Pioneer by the elders and CO. It's like "Jehovah", would approve.

I think, this is one of the greatest irony of our time. Unfortunatley, most countries in developing world do not have social security as a fallback position in time of need. Parents in those lands depends on having more children as a form of social protection when hardship kicks in.
