Tinker, same here, I use to ride my bike down to Huntington Beach, the Cliffs, and Bolsa Chica (remember when it was called Tin Can Beach and all the homeless who lived in cardboard shacks on the beach, or any other material they could build a shelter out of). Remember the tar balls you would get from the oil rigs off the coast, all of these environmental groups have had a great impact on cleaning up the waters and beaches in the Southland.

Designs when did you start surfing, as a teenager or younger? Jr high school we had kids who were incredible, I hated being a "sponger" and "knee boarder", now I am too old and must resign myself to a Long Board 10 ft?

I remember body surfing at Hunington and Seal Beach and being covered with all that natural seepage oil and tar, remember the spin they put on all that oil that covered you after swimming from Dana Point to Redondo and Santa Monica beaches?

nothing wrong with a Long Board, that how King Kamehameha did it. Do I remember Tar Balls, esh, I might still have stains on the bottom of my feet. Thank goodness for the cleanup. My mom would pack a picnic 5 out of 7 days a week in summer and we would head to Tin Can Beach. We liked the Cliffs and places to get out of the wind. And our HB Pier, one of the longest on the coast. Part of it was destroyed by storms in the 80's but rebuilt now. No trip to SoCal is complete until I walk the HB Pier....NOT THE Seal Beach Pier, nice but HB RULES. Watching the surfers off the pier is one of my favorite things ever. And The Wedge for waves and watching the surfers is wonderful. We used to sit on the beach and watch my brother counting the swells and waiting for the perfect curl. He had huge surf knots on his feet and knees from paddling his board. If you were lucky enough to have grown up at the Beach, you are Lucky Enough.

you must know that I would be leading a Surfrider Team in cleaning up, picking up and doing everything I could to keep our Beaches clean and safe, if I lived nearby. For now I am far in the PNW so I do support our forest and wildlife protection groups. As a member of my local arboretum we have lots of events to teach and inform the public in how they can Save Our Trees, Forests and Wildlife.

My goal is to retire near A Beach and A Public Garden and to volunteer as a docent and insturctor to the next generation of Surfers, Skiers, Hikers and Gardeners.

The Wedge, that break smashed my nose while trying to body surf it. How many people you think broke their necks trying to ride that nasty break when we got a pumping South Swell during the Summer?

I watched a fun show that lasted one Season "Orange County Life Guards", so much changed while the Ocean and Beach are timeless. Sometimes when I get I watch all the Surf-Cams from San Diego County to Ventura and Santa Barbara. H.B. has the most action, lots of people doing jogging, exercising and other activity at 6am, I love the Beaches!

Are you aware of the Mountain Bike trails in the San Gabriel Mountains? I use to hear of people getting their "Ritchy", "Marin" and high end Trekk's stolen by trail theives. Have you hiked up those trails, I would like to hike them again for old times sakes, the San Gabriel Mountains (I use to fish near the 405 and 60 in the San Gabriel River while massive traffic flowed by. I hiked the Angeles Crest National Forest too, I would like to go back and see how much things have changed. Salton Sea, have you been there?

AA- I learned to surf around 1964, our congregation had about a dozen young guys and some of the girls who surfed which was really fun, we were all in school together. We use to spend Spring Break camping at Carlsbad State Beach, any remember the Flower fields across Coast Hwy..

I never tried to shoot the pier surfing at HB, but I would with a Boogie Board, we made our own out of plywood and use Spar Varnish.

San Gabriel Mountains, we would ride our bikes up a trail off of old Hwy 39 to a great little swimming hole, dive from the rocks and play Tarzan for the day!

Tinker- I lost fins at the Wedge, I think they still must be their churning in those waves lol. Across the jetty was a great snokeling area, China Cove, I had a five man raft and we would take the kids from the Hall there from the KH we were in near LA, for them it was a whole new world. If they weren't good swimmers they would just put on a snorkel mask and hang their heads over the side and check out all of the marine life.

The Natural Resource Defense Council just published the latest- America's Most Polluted Beaches. Yahoo news is running the story if you want to check your own State.

Five Southern California Beaches made the list- Bolsa Chica, Newport Beach 58th St, Newport Beach 52nd St., San Clemente Califia St., San Clemente Las Palmeras Ave.. Also on the list was Doheny Beach in Dana Point. Shocked and disappointed to say the least. Bummer. Stay out of the surf in these spots if you don't want a sore throat and ear aches.

Back in the 60s when we could still have congregation picnics we would all go to Califia St. for a day of BBQs and body surfing. Can't think of how many times I camped at Doheny State Beach. And one of the cutest sisters ever to grace a bikini rocked on the sand at Newport Beach 52nd St.. Ahh the memories.

designs, those are actually the "5 star" beaches for California — the good ones!

    http://www.nrdc.org/media/2013/130626.asp

    THE NATION’S 13 “SUPERSTAR” BEACHES

For several years, NRDC has issued star ratings to each of the 200 popular beaches around the country. There were 13 beaches last year that received the 5-star rating:

    • Alabama: Gulf Shores Public Beach in Baldwin County
    • Alabama: Gulf State Park Pavilion in Baldwin County
    • California: Bolsa Chica Beach in Orange County
    • California: Newport Beach in Orange County (2 of 3 monitored sections)
    Newport Beach - 38th Street
    Newport Beach - 52nd/53rd Street
    • California: San Clemente State Beach in Orange County (2 of 2 monitored sections)
San Clemente State Beach - Avenida Calafia
San Clemente State Beach - Las Palmeras
    • Delaware: Dewey Beach - Dagsworthy in Sussex County
    • Delaware: Rehoboth Beach in Sussex County
    • Maryland: Ocean City at Beach 6 in Worcester County

    • Minnesota: Lafayette Community Club Beach in St. Louis County
    • New Hampshire: Hampton Beach State Park in Rockingham County
    • New Hampshire: Wallis Sands Beach in Rockingham County

The star system awards up to five stars to each select popular beach for exceptionally low violation rates and strong testing and safety practices. The criteria include: routinely testing more than once a week, not waiting to resample the water before notifying the public when tests reveal bacteria levels violating health standards, and posting closings and advisories both online and at the beach.

    THE NATION’S 11 “REPEAT OFFENDERS”

Over the last five years of this report, sections of 11 U.S. beaches have stood out as having persistent contamination problems, with water samples violating public health standards more than 25 percent of the time for each year from 2008 to 2012:

    • California: Avalon Beach in Los Angeles County (4 of 5 monitored sections):
Avalon Beach 100 feet west of the Green Pleasure Pier
Avalon Beach 50 feet east of the Green Pleasure Pier
Avalon Beach 50 feet west of the Green Pleasure Pier
Avalon Beach East of the Casino Arch at the steps
    • California: Doheny State Beach in Orange County (6 of 7 monitored sections):
Doheny State Beach, 1000' South Outfall
Doheny State Beach, 2000' South Outfall
Doheny State Beach, 3000' South Outfall
    Doheny State Beach, North Beach
Doheny State Beach, North of San Juan Creek
Doheny State Beach, Surfzone at Outfall
    • California: Poche County Beach in Orange County
    • Indiana: Jeorse Park Beach in Lake County (2 of 2 monitored sections):
    Lake Jeorse Park Beach I
    Lake Jeorse Park Beach II
    • New Jersey: Beachwood Beach in Ocean County
    • New York: Ontario Beach in Monroe County
    • Ohio: Lakeshore Park in Ashtabula County
    • Ohio: Euclid State Park in Cuyahoga County
    • Ohio: Villa Angela State Park in Cuyahoga County
    • Ohio: Edson Creek in Erie County
    • Wisconsin: South Shore Beach in Milwaukee County

It is important to note that some of these beaches have multiple sections that are tested for water quality, and in some instances only certain sections of a beach qualified for the repeat offender list.
