I've only met a few Canadians but the people I've met seem to have a deep seated resentment for the United States. It seems strange to me that they spend so much time brooding and fretting about it. Canada doesn't come up much in conversation here but when it does it's always positive. It's a beautiful country.

paul, I call the syndrome "big brother, little brother". Little brother will always be playing catchup and never quite make it. When big brother says you are too little to come along to play, there is nothing little brother can do about it. Big brother, of course, can't see a problem. He's too busy tackling big boy problems.
When the auto industry collapsed, the US rallied around and took care of its own. Shut down factories in Canada. That area of Canada is still depressed. All was fine and good as long as big brother was fat and happy. But Canadians are under no illusion as to where America's priorities lie.

Thanks Jgnat, that makes sense. Regarding the auto industry, however, they've shut down a lot of factories here too. In Cleveland alone, they shut down the Chrysler stamping plant, the Ford engine plant and soon the Ford stamping plant will shut down too.

Paul you just proved the point well thing are doing so great here in the US the Canadian just need to grow up.
Tell it to them when it comes time to buy their oil. They have already made jestures to China as China is willing to pay more for their oil than the US has so far offered. Same goes for a lot of places with oil and China isn't just offering money in Africa they have been building infastructure. Something the US has done atleast not without demanding repayment with interest.

I don't think it's resentment, I think it's nervousness from sitting on a lot of natural resources and being so close to a much larger neighbour that some could consider has shown a willingness to act aggresively when it comes to oil etc... in the past.
Plus some cultural differences - in the UK for instance things are much less 'reverential' in general (humor, conversation) which I think Americans take as being aggresive or insulting when it isn't intended as such. It's just how we talk. We do it more to those closest to us.
Like New Zealand and Australia, there is also a tendency to want to differentiate yourself from the bigger (louder?) neighbor which may also play a factor.
Don't Americans talk about Mexico a lot?

There is both an osmosis of all the best from canada into the states, and there is/was active suppression by the states of anything that would challenge american interests.
The osmosis thing includes such things as actors, musicians, scientists, raw materials like oil lumber water, etc. That isn't always to the fault of the americans. Often, canadians give less if any support to their own than americans do.
The active suppression of canadian potential by us elements has been going on at least since the late fifties. Examples are the avril arrow, which challenged the american u2 as the fastest, bestest plane. Suppression of canadian car companies and nationalisation of raw materials like oil are other examples.
Like the big brother/little brother illustration, you can understand why some of us might have our shorts in a wad.
Compare the lack of industry in canada w the explosive industries in, say, korea (south). They have 3 car companies, a huge ship building industry, steel foundries, huge electronics industry, etc. Even sweden has its own car company.

Using the big brother little brother excuse for constantly bragging
that Canadians are "morally superior" to Americans is so petty minded
and resentful and jealous, apply that to any other relationship and it stinks.
Canada is weird, and I was not only born here, I come from a line of Canadians
all the way back to 1734, there are parks named after my family.
I have always wonded why Canada does not have its OWN car industry.
Every developed nation on earth does except Canada,
we simply manufacture other peoples brands.
And ignat: How is it you so greatly admire the Chinese
imperialism while simultaneously hating American imperialism ?
The rule of law does not rest upon the same values in China
as it does in the West. Our Rule of Law is based on Torah,
the Ten Commandments, the Hebrew and Roman legal system.
The Chinese are a slippery, secretive and extremly racist society
and they base there philosophy on Confucius teachings,
which essentially says the masses of people are for the consumption
and use of the rich. No health care, no free K-12 education in China.
Money is the most important life goal, in China, and if a
worker is injured there is no workers compensation, they just fire him
and leave him to die. No welfare, no social housing, or charity as we know it
is non exisitant. Benevolent societies are clan based power structures.
Its the Great Wall of China School of Business;
in building the Great Wall they worked the workers to death
and then plastered their bodies into the wall. In Africa they mow down villages.
A future ruled by China would be your worst nightmare.
Allowing them to buy one square foot of Canada is a mistake.
Mexico saves itself by having a rule that no-one but indigenious Mexicans
can actually own the land or resources of Mexico.
China's involvement in Africa or Canada, is not benevolent.

Simon, no, American's don't talk much about Canada or Mexico unless it's related to vacation plans. To your point, however, there is a lot of talk about China. Since a lot of jobs are being exported, people feel threatened by the rise of China so they talk more about it.
