    Watchtower-Free:

I went to a district assembly several years ago on a Sunday. I wore a denim skirt but was otherwise well-attired (at least I thought so). Well, during the lunch break when I was walking outside along the grounds and looking for people I knew, I became aware that I was being followed around by some "brother".

I later found out that they follow people wearing denim because they think you are there to make trouble or place apostate literature.

In my opinion, I think the religion's hatred of denim and making sure that JWs look "businesslike" is to give the impression to the world that they are "educated". Meanwhile, nothing could be further from the truth.

I find it odd that those invited to these conventions are 'exemplary' JWs (Elders, MSs and Pioneers) and still these exemplary JWs have to be told what to wear, when to wear and where to wear.

Excellent point, JWGoneBad. It only shows if the WTS can't control the "exemplaries" they must be really worried about the not so exemplaries.

Wasn't there a video with some brothers preaching in Greenland, in blue jeans?

They want walking advertisements. They want them for free. They may broker cheaper deals with agencies, but they do NOT sponsor anyone. Not even for traveling to another country to help where the need for Watchtowers is greater!! It is the ultimate scam. You pay for everything.

They even expect you to comply with this "suggestion" at local DC's and CA's. You are asked to dress like you are going to Bethel when you check into a Hotel. You are asked to wear your delegate badge at all times, blah,blah... They want JW's to look out of place so that when "worldy people say, " Hey, you look different.", it won't be a lie!

Yan Bibiyan: So what, we take red eye flights in 3 piece suits? Sounds comfortable.

Ha ha, when I went to an international convention in 2009 me and the 3 friends I travelled with were pretty much the only JWs on the flight and then coach from the airport who were not wearing suits. We were so embarrassed but we didn't predict that we would be expected to wear suits for a 9 hour flight!

If I was going next year, I would definitely be breaking out the red skinny jeans.

I was a delegate to an international convention and in the long winded packet it was specifically mentioned no denim as the WTBS did not want us to look like tourists... We were "representatives". My BFF at the time and I got into a huge fight when she pulled out a denim outfit she wanted to wear and I had to pull out the instructions and show her: they said NO! Yep I was seriously indoctrinated then.

Today she's DFd trying to get back in. Me: waaaaay out of the madness. Go figure!

Notice that the bans on denim clothing are all in in-house WTS publications. Nothing in their official publications. During my 2nd tour as a regular pioneer, four of us wore dressier denim skirts in service, layered with tights, boots, etc. They were warmer in the winter and were under our coats. But some stuffy CO told us we could not wear them. Now we were all single sisters, and had no head but Christ and the CO was not Christ, so we kept wearing them...........He also disapproved of sandals in the summer without pantyhose....we did not wear pantyhose despite his preference. One Thursday at the meeting for service, his wife showed up in sandals without pantyhose...not a word from him again.

I knew several jws that went through Gilead and went to warm, warm climates.

wore shorts, sandals and short sleeve shirts in service and that was just the sisters..........

I visited Hawaii and the sisters wore muumuus and flipflops and the brothers only wore suitcoats and ties on stage...with slacks, shoes, socks, and shirt.

Or the elders who wore string ties and cowboy boots on the stage (western US)

but what they are talking about is NOT applicable to the rank & file attending a district or circuit convention

    Not true.

This same strict dress code has been laid down for attending summer district conventions in the past two years. The KM is telling delegates in the annual instructions they should arrive at the hotel for check-in in their meeting clothes (suit/tie, etc.). Delegates are also told to be in their dress clothes when they go out to eat before and after the convention program.

Pretty soon JWs will be required to wear meeting clothes 24 hours a day. Which will really suck if you're a life guard at the local swimming pool.

    *** km 4/12 p. 5 par. 6 Our District Conventions—Powerful Testimony to the Truth ***

When we wear our convention badge, this not only serves to advertise the convention and enable other delegates to identify us but also gives a witness to onlookers. People in the convention city will observe that those wearing a convention badge are dressed neatly and modestly, not with the unkempt and provocative styles common in the world. (1 Tim. 2:9, 10) Therefore, we should give attention to our dress and grooming while in the convention city, including when we check in at the hotel. Arriving in shorts and a T-shirt would not reflect dignity. Even if the convention is at an open-air stadium, our clothing should be dignified. If we choose to change clothes after the program concludes and go to a restaurant, we should remember that we are still convention delegates and should not dress in an overly casual manner.

    *** km 4/10 pp. 5-6 par. 6 District Conventions—A Time for Joyful Worship ***

Dress and Grooming: Foreign merchants traveling on the road could easily recognize Jesus’ family and other Jewish worshippers who were traveling to and from the festivals because of the fringed edges on their garments and the blue string above the fringe. (Num. 15:37-41) Though Christians do not wear distinctive garb, we are known for dressing modestly and being neat and clean. We should give particular attention to our appearance when traveling to and from the convention and while in the convention city. Even if we change clothes after the program, we should maintain a dignified appearance and wear our convention badge. In this way we will stand out from non-Witnesses and make a good impression on observers.

"Of course, an elder the governing body having strong opinions or a certain taste in dress and grooming may decide accordingly for himself for 8 million JWs and his family all families. But as to the flock voiceless slaves, he needs to bear in mind Paul’s point: “Not that we are the masters over your faith, but and we are fellow workers Lords for your joy added burdens, for it is by your faith submission [to the Watchtower] that you are standing being judged.” (2 Corinthians 1:24) Yes, resisting giving in to any impulse to set rules for the congregation, the elders work to build up fabricate new ways to judge others’ faith obedience to mindless Watchtower rules.
