JWs ARE open to new information and ideas... as long as they are "new light" from the "faithful and discreet slave."

In a JWs mind having the same opinion as the WT is open-mindedness.
"new information and ideas" = new information and ideas the WT tells you to accept.
"willing to examine and evaluate" = as long as you only examine and evaluate from WT publications.

Watchtower 1967 June 1 p.338 Move Ahead with Jehovah's Organization
12 How will we put these four things into effect? First, study: We may think of study as hard work, as involving heavy research. But in Jehovah's organization it is not necessary to spend a lot of time and energy in research, for there are brothers in the organization who are assigned to do that very thing, to help you who do not have so much time for this, these preparing the good material in The Watchtower and other publications of the Society. But you do not study enough? Take this suggestion: Often the very best and most beneficial studying you do is that done when you read a new Watchtower or Awake! or a new book with the joy of getting the new truths and a fresh view.

@ADCMS: 1967? Wow. Some of us should have been paying more attention. I know they have repeated similar advice recently. Especially wrt those who were showing an interest in studying Hebrew and Greek. Why bother, right? We already did that!

"Hebrew and Greek, why bother?" More like, Hebrew and Greek, forbidden."

Mr Fool
Luckily the Watchtower has now (2012 Aug 15) changed its mind and want us to learn "all we can about the history of Jehovah´s organization"

DATA_DOG: personally I never saw the problem. It could only make you a better witness, right? I mean, the truth is the truth. it can stand up to any scrutiny. You would think the WTS would love to have some real scholars on-board. So they pay for some folks to become lawyers and dentists, but not language experts? I wonder why?

At Mr Fool: I think they added the caveat - a 'balanced' study somewhere recently. That means just read the Proclaimers book. Could be in the same article. I will have to check. I wanted to ask my wife how she understood 'balanced'. Not spend too much time?
